John,
I agree it is a good and robust looking cast. With proper oil(lubrication) and water/pump (heat removal) would be difficult to kill this thing. Using explosive gases to get the tractor started in my point of view is strictly prohibited.

JC,

That's why I'm thinking, by looking at those pistons it must have been a heavy dose of ether or maybe someone ran straight gas, not sure what gasoline would do to a diesel but probably couldn't be good, I think it would fire when compressed?

That's weird about that red paint inside the block and rear housing, wouldn't think it needs priming in there and I'm surprised that stuff would be exposed when they were spray bombing it.

I think it is a pretty good idea to prime inside as it makes for a slick surface so dirts really can't adhere well to wall surfaces. when I removed the strainer from my diffy most of the dirt and oil were basically on the bottom floor of diffy and nothing on the walls. below is where they missed blue pain on the bottom of diffy, not prime and I would have surface rust on the cast iron.

JC, I think you got a Farmal, pointed blue. Better check the serial numbers!:D:D

Hi Ya'll, Just to make sure everyone is clear, I have two 1700s. The first one I bought was 4WD with a cracked head and pistons galled up from running hot. The second one is a 2WD and runs but the proof meter is out of commission and I really don't know how many hours are on it. It could use an injector rebuild.

Ha Ha Ray, I think they painted a chickadee yellow and sold it to me as a canary!!:D:D.

Russell,

I'm thinking out loud here. You hope to come out of this thing with one 4wd tractor in good working order. Have you considered to remove the front axle and drive shaft to make your working 2 wd to a 4wd jobby? may be you can avoid valve/head and piston replacement job doing it that way. it is like you're adding a 4 wd option to a 2wd tractor. You can also use the injector on 4wd in converted 2 wd tractor. it seems you have enough parts to work with. of course you still end up with a tractor that you are not sure about it's life expectancy. By the way if you look at the pic in Post#22 you'll find the plate that houses the front wheel drive shaft housing and gear. Don't know for sure but when I look at the parts breakdown it appears to me a housing is all need to mesh drive shaft and associated gearing to mesh with transmission. You'll have to put in the 4WD selector as well. Just a thought, it might have a chance.

JC,

ps. Do you have ROPS on both tractors?

Another reason to paint the inside is to prevent oil leaks. Cast is porous and you can have pin holes that leak. The paint seals them up. I think it is an epoxy paint.

JC, I thought of the front end swap but it seemed like an engine swap would work better. But then I still would be unsure of the engine. In the book I believe ther is a difference in the oil capacity on a 2WD and 4WD engine. Probably have to change the oil pan to match if I had gone that direction. But I didn't. The engine rebuild is my path.

Hey JC and jones, do you have a recent picture of your 1700?. here's one of mine. A little worn, but runs great. Took that picture today, a balmy 60 degrees here today. Was out clearing the property.

Tex,

There got to be something wrong with us:D I have had several cars in the last 30 years and don't even have a single pictures unless it some how was in the background. It sure seems we're proud of some of the rustiest thing we own as long as it is called tractor.

Here is mine, hard at work. Her official name is "Beatrice":D:D

Nice JC. Some times I wish I had turf tires to change into when the ground is wet. I noticed that you have a full rack of weights in the front, are those factory, or can you get after market ones that fit? Or maybe I need to get lighter implements! lol I've been pulling around this 5 ft cutter, pretty heavy but the Ford doesnt complain too much. Looks like you have plenty to mow out there yourself. Thanks!
