Update...

I called the township yesterday. A lady answered the phone and I explained the situation. I told her about what had been dumped and, get this, she wanted to know if they had left their name with the rubish! Excuse me...you wanted to know if the person dumping illegally left their name to be implicated??? Then she asked why Iwanted it cleaned up. What??? For starters, how about taking pride it the appearance of the townhip!!! Luckily she handed me over to the roads supervisor and I was told that anything 25' or further from the center of the road was the responsibilty of the land owner. (The land is State gameland.) It is all right along the edge of the road so I do think it is within 25'. He said that they have to pay to dispose of tires but would take ride down my road today and make a motion to pay for disposal at tonight's supervisor's meeting.

I offered to help them clean it up, provided they supplied the truck.

I'll let you know what happens.

Are the dirty dumper procreating and creating more dumpers? I agree, McDonalds is the fast food of choice but the beer cans/bottles I pick up are more like Coors Light (less expensive). Interesting question as well, I think drinking suppresses the guilt associated with littering, so drunks are more likely to litter.

The dumping is not enforce because it is no longer deviant behavior. Just like trespassing on a farm, showing your underwear with your pants hanging off your butt, and smoking dope, it is acceptable. It is another example of how we are "slouching."

Tell your township you will not pay your taxes until they start cleaning up the roadways. How long before you will see some "enforcement." Good work forcing their hand and I am pleased that the roads supervisor is interested and trying to help, I am sure he is a busy guy.

I must admit, I've never had the pleasure of using one before. Unfortunately the instructions were not part of the package that was left for me. I'm hoping it was negative though, I'd hate to go out in a few months and find a baby out there.

Today my wife picked up the litter thrown out car windows into our front yard and reports Wendys was the throw away of choice.
Makes ya feel like taking the stuff and dropping it off at their front door.

The mail litter I find in my yard is from Wendy's, McDonalds and Popeyes. These are all about 4 miles from my home. Just enough time for people to finish their meal while driving and chuck it out the window.

As far as beer cans go, it was legal for people to drink and drive in Louisiana until a couple of years ago and I knew many people who usually had a few cans or bottles lying around inside their cars. Now that Louisiana passed an open container law which makes it illegal to have an open alcoholic container in your car, either empty or not, everyone is chucking them out the window as soon as they finish so they don't get caught with them.

There is a privately run website for the people in my county. One of the topics just brought up was the illegal dumping that went on years ago.

There is/was a utility transformer company near where I work. When the transformer oil was replaced in old units they would put the oil in a specially built truck. The truck when then drive down rural roads in the surrounding counties spreading a little love on the roads. The oil was treated as a hazardous waste since it likely contained PCBs and it was expensive to handle correctly.

Supposedly back in the day people dumped this oil on the dirt/gravel roads to keep down the dust and the weeds. The PCBs were not recognized as a problem back then. But these guys did know and went around dumping the oil.

The company is/was a Superfund site.

People can be disgusting creatures. Nothing sickens me more than being out on a nice country road (usually fishing)and finding someones truckload of crap. A road near home was used as a dump. The county dump came in and cleaned it up. Signs were posted warning that the area was being monitored. Now that the road is passable by cop cars, the dumps are gone and havent come back. Knock on wood.

In the county, we get a spring and fall cleanup pass to take a load to the dump for free. You can haul under 110KG to the dump at any time for free.

If your hauling more than 110 KG you pay $55 a tonne for regular garbage or around $40 ? for C&D. All regular garbage must be separated for sorting.

All our "food" garbage goes into a green bin for compost. Recycables go in Blue bags (up to 2). All other garbage goes in a black bag (private items) and a clear bag (everything else). Were only allowed to put out 4 bags every 2 weeks. All other bags or ones that arent sorted correctly get rejected. Yes its work, but we have among the highest rates of landfill waste reduction in North America.

By the sound of some of the posts here, there are places without mandatory garbage pickup. I can only imagine the mess around the dirtballs places who refuse pickup. Where does that garbage go? Burned or burried on their or someone elses property? I can't fathom this being allowed, it sounds like an environmental disaster.

I agree with the other posters, we have a bottle deposit. Theres hardly any bottles on the roadsides. Now if we can only get rid of the most disgusting things of all...."Trucker Bombs"

LB, I feel your pain on this dumping and littering issue, but I think the suggestion to return trash to the fast food merchant is just wrong. There is nothing that merchant can do to make their customers responsible and reduce littering. I clearly put that responsibility on the head of the person doing the littering. I'd like to draw an analogy. Would you say that if a person dumped a couch you would like to return that couch and drop it at the front door of the furniture store? I don't think so. Sure, there are far more bags and drink cups littering our roads, but I don't think we can blame the merchant. They have no magic lens to look through to identify which customers will litter. Just my opinion. . . and you have every right to your opinion even if it is different from mine.

Years ago I had some property with a very deep ravine along the side of the tar road My neighbor told me that someone had dumped trash down in it snow banks were almost 4 ft high and I got a long telescoping pole with hook and was able to snag a bag they had thrown a couch and chairs end tables and about 8 bags ,found there discarded mail and called police well the Chief was out of town for a couple of weeks and they dispatched Barney Fife he looked over the area and said why don't you wait till spring to have them get it out.I told him that was not an option that I would give them 5 days after that I would press charges.They came over a couple of days later and got it out took about 6 hrs they were not happy campers.
The amusing thing about it was they lived about 1/4 mile from their own dump in the next town and they decided to drive 18 miles to dump it on my land.
Another time my sons and I were fishing in a pond not far from the house and we saw what we thought was a suitcase floating in the water we paddled over and saw it was a safe we managed to get it to shore and I went to get my neighbor the chief and he took it back home. He said he would call me when he found something out and said might even be a reward.
Well he calls the next day and tells me that there was $20K in the safe I went WOW then he tells me that its all in checks that the was only loose change in it, the safe had been stolen from a business 2 towns away about a year before and the thieves never got it opened.
So much for a reward.

It never ceases to amaze me that people vote to make dump access nearly impossible, charge for every item dumped, and still wonder why trash appears everywhere else. The idea that humans are slobs is not new. Neither is the idea that humans will almost always take the path of least resistance. As someone else pointed out open container laws increase litter. Government is supposed to supply service in return for your tax dollar, instead they provide bureauracy. Fund your DPW a couple million more per year & maybe they'll pick up the trash, or at least open the dump. I'm just joking about the pick up the trash part. Looking over my property today as the snow melts I found 5 empty pint vodka bottles, all the same brand & varying in label decomposition, where a cruiser regularly parks for radar patrol. A fire dept buddy confirmed the brand is one officer's favorite. I'll talk to the chief but that officer was part time & has moved on already. Doubt the chief will come pick up the bottles. MikeD74T
