If you can wait on the slab, that's a far better way to go. I am like you, "pay as I go" and do not finance. When I started my shop, I only had enough money to do the roof and partial sidewalls. I actually poured a 4'' wide by 8'' deep footer all the way around the perimeter and then build on top of that.

It was a while before I could finish the sidewalls and pour the floors, needless to say, it was cramed fulls and yes, not only does your stuff get dirty, it will also get more rusty.
But, hey, it took a good while but at the end of each stage, it was all mine, no note to worry about.

Pouring the floor was not that much more difficult, my son and I actually poured it and finished it ourselves. The only thing is that when your pour something that already has a rood, it will take much longer to dry enough to work and finish trowelling out.

Yeah but having that roof can be an advantage, protecting the surface from a wicked hot sun or if the sky opens up with a down pour.

There is a disadvantage not being able to work the slab from the outside perimeter.

Unless it is something under the table, let us all know where you got it.

J & I Manufacturing - Truck beds, Trailers, and Supplies for the farming, ranching, and oilfield industries.
Note, that they sell components.. You cut your posts from 30' posts that you receive, this is a weld up building.. Not some bolt together kit. You get a set of "plans" that give instructions on how to assemble, and install trim..
Luckily, in Country Texas, we don't have all of the building restrictions, and engineering requirements that the rest of the country seem to be saddled with..
The website will make evident that deep discounts that you can get from the metal supplier, instead of going thru several middle men and re-sellers to buy your materials.

If you want to get something from J&I, talk to Craig, and tell him Daniel Cooper sent ya !!
You walk in the door, decide what you want, pick your colors from their sample board, and they go pull it for you right then..
About a 2 hours deal.. No ordering and waiting weeks to get a bolt together kit..
You get it all there..
I have done lots of trading with J&I and once you see their prices, you'll know why I am willing to make the 180 mile drive to get a trailer load of steel.
As you can see on the website also, they sell lots of stuff besides just steel..
I have bought stock handling equipment, roping chutes, water troughs, tractor seats, tires, welding equipment and accessories, and a ton of other stuff from them..

Daniel I hope you take lot of photos of the progress. I'm guessing if you're not a welder this wouldn't be a good kit to purchase?

DTCOOPER,
I have been looking at the 40X60X14 from J&I. How good are the plans, I know the prices are good enough to get me to drive up from south Texas, but, I was wondering if the plans are good enough where you don't end up with a ton of questions at the start. And you are right, my slab is costing more than the building! But, I figure if I can go this long waiting on a proper shop I can wait until the fall for a properly built one.

The "plans" are an instruction packet consisting of about 8 pages..
It is really a pretty simple process. If you're expecting a big set of engineered drawings, you will be disappointed.. But if you truly think about it, there's not that much to a steel building anyway. Once you get your corner posts laid out the rest is just following a common sense approach to putting it up..
The most difficult part you will encounter is putting all of the trim on ... And the instructions do show you which trim goes where..
If I can help in any way, please don't hesitate to let me know !!

Daniel,

Good to hear of your progress. Did you find a concrete guy? I'm sort of looking for one right now as I've had issues with the last guy I used and the one that I liked, went off the deep end with his drinking.

It's really not all that harder for a crew to pour the concrete after the barn is built, but it does make building it a little easier to have the slab in place. If you don't have to have it right now and want to get started building, then it seems like a pretty easy decision.

The only concern is to make sure to get the concrete poured as soon as you can after you finish building. The longer you wait, the more stuff that you put into the barn, the harder it will be to get it all cleared out to pour the concrete. I met a guy who has been talking about pouring concrete in his barn for over 30 years, but just doesn't have the time to get it all cleared out to do the pour. On my first barn, I put down rock and planed on pouring concrete for 2 years. It never happened. The guy who owns it now has also been telling me he's going to pour concrete, but has been putting it off. Every year, you just get more stuff in there and it gets harder and harder to get around to it.

My shop has concrete floors and it's the only way to go. Doing anything on dirt or rock is just terrible.

Good luck,
Eddie

Eddie, you are So right on with the Do it now if you can approach...My barns been in for a few years and so I have a few years worth of stuff I'm going to have to move/throw away/sell/charity/keep before I can pour a floor...Where do all these "I have to keep" things come from?

Daniel,

I went to Mueller's yesterday to see how they compared to a barn that I printed out off of the J & I site. They wanted $5,000 for a 36x50x14. Mueller's said that they would start at around $11,000 for the same sized building for a weld up kit. Bolt up would be about 15% more, but I'm trying to compare apples to apples. He said that their kit would be allot heavier, but he didn't give me a real price. That's on the way.

I told you on the phone that I'd swing by your place this week, but now it's looking like I wont be in your area until later in the week, next week. I very much want to see the kit, and hopefully, you'll have some of it started by the time I can make it there.

Eddie
