Yep, I agree, once again, 5W-20 is the way to go in a modern engine that specifies that weight!

We've run 5W-20 Castrol and Fram filters in the wife's 2003 Hon-Due Accord for over 100,000 miles now. Not a hint of any problem

I have a Dodge truck and a Chrysler 300C, both with the Hemi and they pretty much have to run 5w-20. They are MDS, which means they drop 4 cylinders at light throttle and run as 4 bangers. It does it by dropping the lifters somehow and shutting the valves down. For this to work correctly, it is designed around a 5w20 oil, and won't work correctly without it.

you could run a 15w-40 or ow-20 and 100 to 1, it will still run great...

There would be more friction from viscous shear with the thicker oil and the tight clearances of the engine bearings would allow less oil thru to cool them. Not as healthy and wastes power & fuel.

So, my truck has 141,000kms/87613 miles and has been on 5w30 since new, except for the one time I ran 10w30, was not paying attention when I grabbed the bottles...

Anyway, will going from 5w30 to 5w40 hurt anything, being just a tad thicker?? What about winter time??

Just out of curiosity - how do you like the MDS engine in the pickup? What size engine is it? What sort of MPG do you get all around? I am assuming the truck is a 1500..

It doesn't really have much to do with the specific oil, but I'd feel safer running an empty beer can filled with paper towels for an oil filter than a Fram filter. At least that way you'd get a better filter element and a far stronger can than with a Fram. Been there, done that, won't make that mistake again with the Fram thing.

Oh now that is the best. I love it, and totally second it!!

Well...if we break this all down..
Lubrication in an engine has a LOT to do with the oil being used!
A beer can DOES NOT have a stronger shell than a Fram oil filter.
And paper towels DO NOT filter material as well as the pleated paper inside a Fram filter. So ..those 3 points we can see are pure garbage!

As far as YOUR preference for not using a Fram...so be it. Me personally..Id rather run with NO OIL FILTER than ever use a Wix again!

Absolutely correct. Bearings are self adjusting. If they don't get the proper flow of lubricant they wear until they do get the proper flow. Very undesirable.
