Oil & Fuel Anyone use a mask to reduce Diesel fumes?

yeah, my major problem with the m59 is the exhaust. I wear a harbor freight surgical mask. Keep a bunch hanging on the wheel shift. It helps.

One job I plan to do with my B2920 is dig out my crawl space, so the space will be confined so I'm interested to see other inputs also.

I was thinking about using the kind of mask that has the two filters on each side - the heavy duty type... anyone used that? Does that work better? I used it when painting and could hardly smell anything...

It would make sense if the exhaust exited from the front to exit under the rear axle, if it is an upright muffler then it needs to be high enough to shoot fumes over your head, then no problem.

Biodiesel is a lot less nasty. I'm running B90 now, after gagging on petro diesel through a long backhoe project. This still isnt perfect, just better.

My exhaust is horizontal forward, next to the right headlight. During stationary work the fan brings fumes back through the radiator.

I was surprised that an oil change after 50 hours of biodiesel didn't have the rancid smell that used motor oil always has.

NONSENSE. :(
Nonsense based on what? Whats NONSENSE is your misinformed unhelpful post. :(
Here are a couple of quick studies that poped up using google...

Biodiesel handbook
And here is an MSDS sheet for biodiesel...

So as you can see while biodiesel does emit smoke and particulate matter it is non toxic smoke and particulate matter. Table salt is 4X more toxic than biodiesel...

I'm not sure I believe in "non toxic" smoke myself. Less toxic, sure. But micro particulates are just bad for your lungs, however derived.

Well you can define "toxic" how ever you like I guess... But as far as the dictionary definition for toxic goes (toxic - Definition of toxic at Define.com Dictionary and Thesaurus (define toxic)) and any other definition of toxic I have heard of, (other than your own definition), biodiesel smoke is deemed "non toxic", period. It is non poisonous and non reactive with the human body and tissue...
When you deep fry food in your home do consider the smoke from the fryer oil toxic? What about incense or cigarettes? I think you could argue the latter is toxic due to some of the toxic chemicals that are added and the fact that they are known to cause cancer however the FDA doesn't consider them toxic hence why you can still buy them, but biodiesel made from all natural plant oils toxic? Not by any stretch of the imagination, before or after combustion...

I should have added to my post above that while my 90% biodiesel didn't leave me feeling poisoned, the particulate crud left me feeling congested and hoarse about like working in heavy dust. And I've read that particles below a certain size can never be expelled from the lungs, they just sit there and clog the blood/oxygen interface. (or something like that)

So a simple particulate mask is probably a good idea with biodiesel also.

I thought the char on a BBQ steak -was- carcinogenic. So maybe the exhaust from biodiesel that is refined from restaurant-waste grease (that's all I can buy) is carcinogenic to some degree. Does anyone have some better information on this?

NONSENSE.

http://www.epa.gov/OMS/models/analysis/biodsl/p02001.pdf

Biodiesel gives incremental reductions in CO, particulates and hydrocarbons, but increase nitrogen oxides. ALL IC engines produce CO, even running on unicorn poop. None have "non toxic" emissions.

The claim is reckless. Run biodiesel in a closed garage and something really, really bad can happen.
