Keep out the idiots that post about things which have nothing to do with tractors.

webmaster this thread could be purged, or perhaps move to rural living or something

Could they be made quiter? Of course they could, but not at a 254 LB weight limit...

I don't know anything about ultralights but I do desert race two-stroke dirtbikes. Over a 'straight pipe' just a few pounds of silencer can make a drastic difference. The key is more likely that they are not required to reduce noise... so they don't.... yet. All 'motor sports' are 'under attack' for noise. I'm sure the manufactures would find a way to meet noise/weight restrictions if not meeting it meant going out of business.

I reference to this and to answer Eagle Dude's original post: No you can't make changes to a certified aircraft without spending big bucks. The only exception is if someone else has spent the money to get a change certified, then you can buy the right to make that change from them.

To my knowledge, there is nothing available that will "quiet" the exhaust on the aircraft in question.

I believe most ultralights, which my statement was addressed to not the plane in the original post, are not FAA certified. My point was also about the manufactures of ultralights, not existing ones.

You did say:
I don't know anything about ultralights
You do know at least one thing about them.

Sorry, I thought that you were suggesting that the exhaust on the offending aircraft possibly could be modified, since that was the gist of your statement.

I think because of flying is quite expensive hobby to fly constantly, I would guess that he is less annoying than tractor running full throttle for hours, Harleys going uphill or trucks using engine break going downhill. Our house is located on opposite side of valley than the road so we get the sound from the road unobstructed. Even though we are somewhat less than a mile from it is still annoyingly loud. When the weather is nice the Harley noise is constant.
My neighbor was shooting something sounding like a pistol for few hours today, quarter mile away. Also annoying.
I run my tractor at full throttle for about six hours today. It is so loud that I should use hearing protection. It could annoy my neighbors I suppose, but nobody showed up complaining.
What I want to say we make noise and have to live with it until somebody comes up with a solution. At this point of time noise is a part of the progress I suppose.
When I was a kid there were only few cars or tractors. The background noise was so low that we could hear a car coming from distance so far away that we were able to run from the woods we were playing in to the road more than a half mile away, jump into a ditch, put our chins on the road shoulder and wait for the car to go around. The loudest things were frogs at night.
Would I get annoy by an airplane buzzing my house? Probably. Would I talk to the guy doing it? Likely. Would I get even if I determine that he is a jerk or thinks it is funny doing over and over. Certainly.
So here is a question. Would you buy and install some kind of expensive supermufler on your tractor or Harley to make it silent if the government legislates it? Or would you think that we should overthrow the govermennt commies infringing on our freedom to make noise as we please.
Note: There are countries where you can't make noise in town on Sunday. Lawn mowing or rewing Harley will get you in trouble.

I did receive a call from the FAA investigator. She assured me that she did a "lot of work" on my behalf, and discussed my concerns with the pilot. (I would have much preferred a sit down between the three of us.)

At any rate she said that he "promised" to not continue his past practice of flying directly over my house unless absolutely necessary. I can live with that. That's all I ever wanted anyway.

As far as him keeping his word, his track record is 0 for 2 so far.....

As for the people posting on this thread that think my narrative is less than accurate, or that I'm being less than truthfull....I can't help you.

I do not feel comfortable giving my address etc. over the internet.

As for the Posters that were sincerely trying to help...you did! You gave me some education, some knowledge, and tactics to fall back on if/when he ever resumes his past practice. For your efforts, I sincerely thank you!

I am now finished with this thread

Sincerely,
Al
