CK30 FEL Joystick repair

Jimmy,

Tell me more.

Same thing has happened to me and I've already broken one cable (pulled right apart at the end of the threaded part).

What exactly holds the spool in the float position? Is it a detent ball bearing with some sort of spring? I was considering just removing it (if possible) and manually holding the float. I use the float a lot.

Thanks,
Tim

Interestingly my joystick suddenly is really "hard" to get into and out of the float position. It was really "easy" for the first 6 months. I guess I should take it apart and have a look.

Follow your loader cables down to the control valve. On the end of the valve towards the front of the tractor, you'll see two caps held in place with allen head screws. Remove the outer one and you will see how the detent works. Similar to male and female ends of air hose fittings. The cap has three tiny balls in it (like the female end of the hose fitting) that will wear out and then the float just won't hold or if the float is hard to engage - you need grease in that cap. Very simple to take care of unless the balls are shot, then the float won't hold - I know from experience..........and the new cap is over a hundered bucks. Good idea to keep your balls greased:)

Thanks Hodak and Rick Wallace. My detent has gotten stiffer to use. I don't want to spend 100 bucks needlessly when a dimes worth of grease will do the trick. Any other places for the joystick controls that need attention with a little lube?

I went to my dealer and he says the plastic balls are probably getting out of round. He will give me new stainless ones free of charge. I'm going to have a good look today and I'll post what I find.

Just wanted to throw a little update on this. I tried greasing the detent mechanism but my float was still very hard to disengage. Next step I took the cable and detent mechanism off and pushed the spool out the detent side. I worked the edge that catches the detent balls (part 36 in the diagram) with a very fine file then polished it with some emory cloth. I took maybe a few thousands off and rounded it over a bit. Works perfect. Obviously you'll want to be very careful and not take too much off or you'll be using a bungee to hold the float. Reminds me of a buddy in high school who used a bungee to hold his VW van in gear...

Seem to have a similar problem. Sent PM. :)

Check those caps on the hyd. block under the floor as Hodak mentioned. Mine was an easy fix after a little cleaning and more grease. It works like new now.

I should share that my problem was water getting into the cables that run down from the joystick control to the valve. The balls were stainless already but the water had corroded the cable and it was also freezing on cold days. Hope it's fixed now.

I'm going to have a look at it this afternoon, had lots of rain here yesterday. My tractor is in a portable garage so does not get wet unless I am using it in the rain, and that does not happen often, could be a different problem. Will let you know what I find and take pics if I can.
I did print out some hints from several posts to help me figure it out. :D
