Tiller Best heavy duty 3pt tiller?

   / Best heavy duty 3pt tiller? #31
I bought my 4' KK 3-4 yrs ago and paid around $950.00 For that money I couldn't find anything to compare. I am no commercial farmer but I use it a good bit. It'll grind up virgin pasture here in Ohio clay based soil and never falter. I have ground up the old garden after the season and have never had a problem with crop remnants getting wound up in there. I do know one thing, it's beats the heck out of the old walk behind torture device/tiller I used to do the garden with. I can now have a beer whilst I'm tilling, pure heaven.

I had meant to say that my 6ft KK II is all gear, 6 tines per flange, 9 flanges, "spiral" arrangement of the angular difference between flanges.
This all adds up to a smooth cut and it rarely bounces around, despite (or because of) it's weight, which I don't remember off hand.
There may be heftier units, but I doubt that (m)any would give better value, say in a unit of measure such as tilled acres per hundred dollars.

I am comparing the CCM tillers:

Heavy Duty 72" MR-190 $2250
54 tines
830#

Commercial 72" - SR-185 $2800
42 tines
1110#

Why so fewer tines on the heavier? Maybe it will last longer that way? Maybe more tines it not better.

Comments?

Thanks,
D.

This is only a guess, but you might find that with fewer tines, the tiller will churn up-breakup larger vegetation easier. Plus I would guess that the tines are a bit heaver than on the heavy duty model. I have been told that in fact a tiller that has 6 tines per flange actually takes less HP than a 4 tine flange. Reasoning is that with a 6 tine flange, each tine is taking a smaller bite.

I know none of this to be fact, just supastition and things that I have heard over the years.

Oh, I have an MR-190 series and although I have not had it all that long, it has worked well for me and seems to be a very beefy implement.

I have to plug Maschio here. I absolutely destroyed a couple King Kutter tillers when I was trying to use a 'bargain' brand. I was working for a contractor and putting in lawns at his new homes. He embarrassed me when he asked why I kept screwing around with a bargain store tiller for commercial use. I bought an appropriate sized and series Maschio and have tilled hundreds of acres without issue since.

For light duty and homeowner use I can see using a bargain store brand but if you want, as you described, a 'heavy duty' tiller, you need to look elsewhere than your local TSC store. I'm not familiar with CCM tillers, but I don't see them sitting on the lots of bargain stores either. To me, if you wanted a 'heavy duty' SCUT, you wouldn't go buy a garden tractor at Lowes or Home Depot. It's the same thing with tillers. Bargain stores are just that, bargain stores. They carry cheaper brand items for light duty use.

Some people can break half a brick with a short feather.

Funny.... I know of dozens of people who use KKII tillers in commercial landscape applications, and a few big time tobacco farmers who till more in a single season that the typical owner does in a lifetime. NONE have ever broken a single part. And they all use 'em behind tractors with far more HP than KK ever intended.

Hundreds of acres????? Yeah riiiiiiight......Here we go again.......

Oh come on now. Not ANOTHER of your "I spent more money than you, so I'm better/smarter/ect than you are" post's........;)

I'll pass on your sarcasm and "they work when being used not as intended" bull. It probably comes as a total and complete shock to you, but most implements and other machinery are purpose built. Can I tow 20k behind a 1/2 ton truck? I guarantee you I can. Will it work as well and as long as a truck built and designed to do so? I guarantee you it can't. You can spout what you want, but I'll stick with using the right tool for the right job. ;) Heavier built tillers such as Maschio and CCM aren't heavier built just for good looks. But, there again, I'm sure you wouldn't believe that either. You just stick with your TSC implements for hard commercial use, for which they were never designed, and I'll use implements designed to do what I need. Some people understand that there is the right tool for a job and others just can't grasp that fact. ;)

And yet OTHERS (like yourself) seem to believe that spending more money ALWAYS results in a better product. Some of us aren't foolish enough to fall for that ridiculous scam. Flash and hype doesn't make something "heavier" Sturdier or better, just more expensive.

And so it goes.....Here goes your another of your "parables" on trucks, ect.......totally unrelated to the subject, or reality either for that matter.

Come on guys - there can be a quality difference. He said he has had good luck with that brand. The multi-speed is something i had not considered. I suspect that is something I should consider.
