Storing a B26 in a sea container

   / Storing a B26 in a sea container #21
I just got off the phone with the vendor who sold me a 20 ft standard container. A high cube is $3100 US which is a bit more than I wanted to pay. I'll stick with the standard container and if my B26 is too high and won't fit it will only be by an inch or so. I'll deflate the tires to get it in and then re-inflate them. It may also help to deter anyone trying to steal it if it won't fit through the door :D
Great looking project. May I ask where you bought your container?

If you don't mind asking how much in materials would you have in the roof? How did you do the roof trusses, ie did you make them yourself or did you have them fabricated

Thanks nice job

I didn't quite know what to do with the door end. I thought of swinging doors to hide the large metal doors etc. I finally just bought a gallon of paint at Home Depot tinted to match the siding and painted the doors. They actually look really nice with just a couple of coats of paint. I didn't take the lettering off (Seacan registration number etc) and just painted over them. I have a picture somewhere.

I bought the container from a firm in California called On-Site Storage Solutions. They gave great service even though the container was to be delivered a continent away. They then contracted with a local towing firm to deliver the container which arrived within five minutes of the agreed upon time. :)

I pre-made the roof trusses myself. I made up a jig on a 4' X 8' sheet of plywood and nailed and glued the trusses with 1/2" plywood gussets using a pneumatic staple gun. I made other trusses years back with a hammer and nails, but a nail or stapler gun makes life a lot easier. Because of the heavy snow load where I am, I went for 3/4" plywood sheeting and trusses 16" OC. Most folks in the States could probably get away with 24" OC. The bottom stringer (??) of the truss is 10' long which gives me 12" overhand on either side of the container.

If you don't mind me being nosey or divulging the information, where are you located to be a continent away from CA. ?

Jeff H,

Sorry I didn't anwer your last question, how did I attach the siding to the container? I installed 1" X 2" strapping set at 45 deg angle. I screwed the strapping to the container with 1 1/2" self-drilling, self tapping metal screws. Two things though. The part of the screw which protrudes inside the container is very sharp and could cut someone so I took a hammer and broke off the 3/4" or so that protruded. The screws are very brittle and break off easily but wear safety glasses. Second, drill pilot holes in the end vertical members. These are thicker than the side walls and maybe made out of harder steel. After breaking off a few screws, I started pre-drilling pilot holes.

I installed PVC electrical conduit and metal electrical boxes inside for the alarm system and 110/220v. I used 1/2" self drilling screws which worked really well and also grounded the box to the metal shell of the container. I installed a "Square D" 60a, six breaker, load center and grounded the load center and container to an 8' ground rod using left over heavy copper wire.

Hello Lakeside

That shed looks great, just what I need!

Can you share a picture of the door end? What did you do with the door? Just paint it?

How did you attached the siding to the steel box?

Thanks
Jeff
How much do you have in this outer shell?

You should be able to purchase a 40ft container for 1000.00 or less. I used to work in Container Management in Iraq and I know what these things sell for on the open market. Basicly thier pallets and there are litterly millions of these things. More come into the states than go out. So the manufacture who sells his product say to Walmart builds the price of the container into the product becuase he dosnt want the container back. Due you honestly think these shipping companies are going to take a load of empty containers back to Thailand,China,South Korea ect. I know the prices you see that are advertise are way above what I quoted. But trust me if the guy wants to make a sale he is going take it because Im betting it costed him about $300.00 or less. There are even a few EMT's I know of who have said that they have dumped overboard empty containers and sunk them out in the ocean. Anyway try local importers who are purchase parts, repair items, medical equipment. Generally they tell the carrier to just take the container back once its unloaded. At some ports there are over 1000 of these things empty and there not making $ sitting there and very very very unlikely that someone is going to request "hey you got 100 empty 40ft containers you can send to me? As bad as the trucking industry is right now containers can be got for CHEAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just keep looking and asking around. The delievery cost well that is something you just have work out. Good luck
