Of course if one could distinguish between 40' and the term "high cube sea container"
there wouldn't be a comment. note I did not see a smiley ( :) )other than that big @$$ spinning bandwidth hog.

And krackerjack9
You should be able to purchase a 40ft container for 1000.00 or less.
Not in my backyard in Feb. of '09.
The lowest price for a 40' regular near Memphis was about $1800 with a $700 delivery charge to Fulton, Ms.
These things don't pack well.
If you know of prices like $1,000 then please give us sources. I need three next week.

/edit - also does anyone have a WAG what it would cost to cut the appropriate sides off from three and bind them together so I essentially have a 40'L x 24'W x 9.5'H shed/garage?

At some ports there are over 1000 of these things empty and there not making $ sitting there and very very very unlikely that someone is going to request "hey you got 100 empty 40ft containers you can send to me? As bad as the trucking industry is right now containers can be got for CHEAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just keep looking and asking around. The delievery cost well that is something you just have work out. Good luck

If one lives near a seaport where these containers are abundant, they can probably be purchased reasonably cheap But, when one lives No Where near a seaport, then these containers, although not hard to come by, can cost a heck of alot more.
Here in NH, the closest dealers prices to purchase starts at $2800 up to $3800 for a used 20' and a 20' yard special is $1800
A used 40' is $3800 to $5550 and there 40' yard specials are anywhere from $950 - $2200
To Rent a container- 20' w/ doors on one end rents for $75 per month, doors on both ends is $90
A 40' w/ doors on both ends is $115 per month.

Is "used" a one way, or used several times?
Could you give us an idea on delivery charges say to Northeast Vermont? (Bakersfield).

Pricing on these containers has very little to do with a seaport nearby! They are not unloaded at the seaport , they are unloaded all across the USA and sent to industrial areas to be re sold. If you have a railhead, large industrial area, military base so on, so on, so on. You need to look around I just saw a add today for $599.00. It will have some easily repaired problems, such as a hole in the side, sprung door, missing weather strip but very usable.

Trick is Ya have to search and be ready to wait for one.

Newbury,
The dealer I mentioned is "Tilton Trailer Rental" Tilton NH. Trailer Container Rental NH New Hampshire
Their website gives no indication whether a container was used once or multiple times.
Their delivery fee is $69.50 per hour, charged from "port to port, meaning they will charge you per hour for the complete round trip, Tilton to Bakersfield and back to Tilton.
I don't know what the distance is but I will guess / assume 2 hours each way plus time to unload etc., so call it $280-$350 +/- for delivery.

This company may be worth looking at. They list locations in Burlington VT. and
Montpelier VT. Portable Storage Containers - Mobile Offices - Mobile Mini Inc.

Well, I'm almost done finishing my sea container. After the wettest summer on record I'm down to a few pieces of soffit. :) My B26 fits it but just barely. One wet morning I drove it in and the top sill of the container wiped the FOPS dry . Side to side there's lots of space it's just the height that's tight.

I really didn't have to finish the outside but I have some problem neighbours would would go out of their way to complain to the city permits department. Anyway, here's what she looks like.

That's a container???

You must be kidding me!

I'd let my mother-in-law move into that... Of course, I'd let my mother-in-law move in when it still looked like a shipping container...

Fantastic job! The neighbors should be taking you out to dinner!

update - prices creep down: I asked for 40' HC WT and 1way from allstate.
We can only offer you watertight 40' HC used containers from Memphis for
$1750 each. Tilt-bed truck delivery and drop off will cost you around $675
for each unit.

Just where did you all get the idea that they 'only' used once ?

I see 'hundreds' loaded on the ship empty, every week.

I work on containers every day, refrigerated, dry and insuls.

Never, ever have I heard of a "one way" container.
