Snow Plow Cylinders With Rust On Piston Rods

I am not sure what you mean by mole board type? It had 11 gauge sheet metal and 6" tall by 1/2" thick cutting edge bolted on the bottom. The cutting edge is not in the pictures but I have it cleaned up and painted black ready to be bolted back on.

Chris

You can get a poly molded board type or the traditional all steel.
The poly ones are a lot lighter depending I guess what you are mounting them on.

That top link cylinder is just what I was thinking of. I figured I could put it on one side and it would do the job. Where did you see the plow cylinders for that price? I may just order new ones.

Chris

This is where I get most of my stuff in Canada.
They had stock cylinders reduced, but I can't see them on their website. They are normally in the $80-$100 range, but they were clearing them out.

Here is some pics of the cylinders. They are worse than I remembered. I have thought about just getting a single double acting cylinder that I can use on the plow in the winter and on the 3 point top link in the summer. I guess I will give these a try first.

Chris

You did not say if any part of that rod went back in the cylinder, if so, then you should clean it up some.

typically the poly plows are actually heavier. Most plows use 11 of 12 ga steel which isn't that heavy. The poly plows, the poly is like 3/8 to 1/2 " thick and requires more supporting steel behind the moldboard.

Just as a quick example, meyers ST7.5 weighs about 50 lbs less than the poly version

Thanks for the enlightenment. I guess I am thinking of my older 8' all steel that must weight about 400-500 lbs. compared with either the newer poly or steel blades. I saw Chris's blade apart and assumed it was a poly thatwould weigh a lot less

Thanks Dave

My blade was 11 ga steel but was not very heavy, maybe 20#. I had a new one cut and rolled for around $50. I just need to get the frame to the sandblasters and then fix a couple of welds. After that I will tack the new blade on and paint it up.

DP, those cylinders look pretty rough-I don't think you are going to save them.

If the fittings screw in towards the rod side of the cylinder, you are out of luck. If the fittings screw into the base of the cylinder away from the rod, you could take a grinder to the rod surfaces and they won't leak.

I think I know what you are saying but the rods were stored about 1/2 way extended. The hydro fitting is on the cylinder side. It will probably be a lost cause. I am guessing I will have to get new cylinders. It was this way when I bought the plow for $80 so I guess I can not complain.

Chris, there is no rod seal on these cylinders. The rod's only function is to transmit force from the cylinder piston to the plow.

If you are going to buy new cylinders, the best place I found is these guys. www.herculesus.com
