Snow Plow Cylinders With Rust On Piston Rods

/ Snow Plow Cylinders With Rust On Piston Rods #31
These single acting snowplow cylinders are more commonly known as "Ram" cylinders and most of them, if not all of them, seal on the rod. There is no piston and the differential pressure area is the rod diameter itself. The inside end of the rod has a guide ring either secured with a nut or else it's a split ring in a groove. The purpose of this ring is only for guiding the rod and not for sealing.

The outer end of the cylinder, where the rod comes out, has one rod seal as well as a separate wiper. Rod seals are either a single V-ring or U- type seal or else a series of "Chevron" seals depending on the manufacturer.

Any high spots or defects on the rod are passing right across the only seal.
