Building a Shop

I put the walls 1st on my last 2 buildings I did, as that way the building is more stable and the trim on the top of side walls was put over the edges and then gutters w/no overhang other than 3" of the roof metal.

Looks like your doing a good job. Everytime you look at it you will know that you did every screw.

The south side is now nearly completely covered with steel. Just the little 1' strip at the corner to do (3' steel panels come up just short of 40')

Also about 3/4 done with the North wall. Won't get too much more done until Monday. They're talking 1-2 inches of rain tomorrow and we're out of town all weekend.

Walls...

All of the wall steel is now up. I put the end walls' main panels up Saturday and finished the wainscot panels on the ends this afternoon. Still some screws to put in, mostly up along the tops of some of the panels where I didn't take time to do as I went (the steel slips up into a J-trim piece, so the panels are somewhat secure, not just flopping around.)

Also this afternoon, I built my "roof steel putter-upper" attachment for my FEL. Didn't remember to take the camera out with me, so no pictures yet, maybe some action shots in a few days. Starting to look like a real shop now...

Just found this thread ( new member) I have been thinking of a DIY pole barn quite some time now. Wanted to thank you for the great info especially the pics, you have answered many of the questions I had. Keep up the good work, I will be anxiously awaiting for more posts and pics.

Thanks for all the kind words of encouragement, helps keep me moving.

Got out there after work today with just enough (barely) daylight left to try out the "putter-upper" It'll take a little practice to figure out the most efficient way to use it, but it worked as designed. Here are the basic steps I'm starting with:

Step 1: Setup 2 ladders. First ladder inside the buidling up at the peak. Second ladder on the sidewall under the eave next to where the panel is going.
Step 2: From the top ladder, toss a vise-grip on a rope over to near the eve. (adjustment screw replaced with eyebolt to tie the roap to)
Step 3: Load roof panel onto wood frame of the 'upper.
Step 4: drive up to side of building and raise loader to position wood frame skids on edge of roof with skids slightly steeper than the roof pitch.
Step 5: Climb up ladder at eve and clamp vise grip to edge of steel panel
Step 6: From the ladder at the peak, pull the panel up with the rope, then pull past the peak a bit to get it out of the putter-upper frame.
Step 7: Move tractor away and get to the business of screwing on the panel.

looks like that will work, I have always had help putting on the roof panels but if your doing it like you are(by your self) looks like you have figured it out.
