Building a Shop

Keep those pics coming as you progress!! I've learned more reading your post and pics than the pole barn book I just bought for $40. I plan an exact project myself next spring here in Indiana on a 40 X 56 with 12 foot walls.

Quick update and a question.

Since my last post, we've had to move to another temporary rental while our house is still being built. This time it's a 1 bedroom apartment and 2 storage units. Needless to say, things are cramped, and I can't find any of my tools. Last weekend was the first real productive time I had back on the shop. All of the windows and the walkdoor have now been framed in and installed. The OH door frameout is just about done, just needs a few more nails. THe fly rafters are on and the poles cut to length. I'm about 1/2 way through framing out the overhangs and fascia boards, which is the last thing to be framed out before I can switch to steel mode...

A question: Has anyone ever used that house wrap stuff (like Tyvek or the other brands) under the steel on a pole building? Not sure I've ever seen it done, but wondered if you guys had...

Bubble wrap was installed first on my shop building before the metal was put on. This made it so much easier in the building process and really made a difference in cold weather. Another benefit was no more rusting on my tools or equipment. See pics. My shop has a concrete floor which was not installed yet in this picture.

Gearing up for another weekend of progress. Finished nailing up the sidewall overhang fascia boards tonight. Not the easiest one man job to nail 16 or 18 foot 2x6s onto the ends of 2x4 fly rafters 13 feet in the air. But, with the help of some quick and dirty jigs/aids, I was able to do it. In the morning I'll cut the purlins and fascias to length on either end and finish framing out the gable end overhangs with 1x6's so I'll be ready to really dig into the trim pile.

More pics (everyone loves pictures)

Finished framing in the overhangs and put up some of the trim pieces over the weekend. Rained Monday and Tuesday, so no progress until tonight. Spent just a little time tonight tacking up the soffit panels (30 of them) on the S sidewall overhang.

Still working out I'll trim out the transition between the eave soffits and the gable end soffits. I had a plan, then saw a display at Menards that gave me a different idea that I went with so far. However, once I got the soffits up to that point, I decided the Menard's setup won't work all that well with my smaller overhangs. So, I think I'll have to cut off some of the trim that's up and go back to plan "A"...

Barn is progressing nicely it looks like. Not near as fast as you would like I'm sure! How about about a pic of the new house progress. I'll be starting that project after my pole barn is up this spring. Keeps the pic coming!

Progress. This weekend I finished up installing all of the soffit panels and the overhang trim. Then this afternoon, my wife and I spent a couple hours starting in on the wall steel. Got partway done before we called it quits for the evening. The whole sheets are easy, it's the sheets partially cut out for the windows that have to slide into or around several j-channels all at the same time... those are not fun, expecially when the wind started picking up about the time we started...

Figured I might catch heck for that! I ended up deciding to work on walls first for a few reasons despite advice from folks here to do the roof first...

1) Timing and wind: I couldn't get myself comfortable with the idea of putting up a big sail/kite/parachute on stilts. If I had a solid week to just knock out all the steel, then it'd be fine, but I didn't like the idea of putting the roof up there and then catching a late fall storm that'd get up under that thing...

2) Also somewhat wind related: I need to make progress when I can, so on days with a breeze, wall steel panels and wainscot pieces are do-able where standing up on the roof with a 16' piece of tin doesn't appeal to me. It all has to be done sometime and with the cold weather coming fast, I can't afford to waste a day/evening waiting for weather.

3) Other advice and things I'd seen: Both my dad and the father-in-law (who isn't a huge fan of me building it myself in the first place) thought walls first would be better. So there's a fair ammount of politics in play there. Also, I've seen a couple of buildings being put up by Cleary in the area this summer where they did the walls first as well. One was a 60+ x 100+ monster a few miles down the road, sat for a long weekend or more with walls on and no roof...

The big advantage I saw to putting the roof up first was to avoid banging ladders into the wall steel. I've put up as much overhang trim as can be done pre-roof to minimize the ladder factor later.

I really do appreciate all the advice from folks on TBN, lots of good knowledge out there. Just a case of being squeezed for time and such and needing to get something done whenever I can.
