Desperately looking for an uncommon part

hi all yanmar fans,

Long time, no post.

My 1601d was still running good up until about two weeks ago when I broke it (oops). I was changing the fuel filter assembly and where it attaches to the block/head (can't remember which) and it broke a cover in two. Now I have a nice hole to the engine that I don't want!

I've attached a couple of pics of the area and the part I'm looking for. Does anyone have this part? Know where I can get it? Hoye doesn't have one and I've tried getting one fabricated but am running out of options.. The tractor has been down for awhile now and needs to be working!!!

Thanks for any help / ideas or leads you might have for this part.

Build a replacement cover.

Piece of scrap 1/4 steel, make the upper 'ear' slightly taller for nut on back.

Good idea, want to try and find a replacement first. If not that, I'll find someone who can cut some metal like that and build one. Thanks!

It doesn't appear to be cast, if not, I would simply clean it up and mig weld it then grind down the welds. Looks like a quick and simple fix from the pics.

I think it's cast aluminum, if so an experienced TIG welder can fix it.

Yeah, I think you might be right. Looking at it again, the top broken edge does appear to be cast. Like you said, it could be TIG'ed and be good as new for much less than an OEM (if available)part. Doesn't appear to be a difficult fabrication as others mentioned for that matter.

Assuming you have called the usual Yanmar parts people, next I would take that to a local machine shop and ask them to duplicate it as a steel plate with a nut welded on for the filter to attach to. (I assume that is what the upper hole does).

I think usually it is best to keep these 100% authentic. But since this broke, it is one case where making a better replica part is justified.

And I think buying local will save a lot of frustration.

While you are searching for a replacement part, patch the hole with any kind of sheet metal and gasket cement, wire up the filter bowl and get on with your life.

Why is there a whole into the engine that looks like it exposes the crank or some other internal part? This filter just bolts to the block not like it has a pushrod that rides on the crank? Why would yanmar not jsut tap 2 holes into the block to mount the housing, are these universol blocks where some have a part that goes through to the inside there like an old mechanical fuel pump on a truck would?

Some have the plate and some have lift pump that the arm goes through the block.

I believe that I would "weld" it up. If it is cast aluminum, you can still use some of that special aluminum solder material and a propane torch. "V" out the break, clean it carefully with vinegar and then you can put the torch to it. It really is not difficult and works very well. I have used the material on the anti cavitation fins on the lower end of an outboard boat motor. It really does work well and is very strong.
