Hunters were on my property and left the gates open and the horses got out.
She phoned the police who said they could do nothing about it because my property wasn't posted. :(
So that gave the hunters permisson to let the horses out. ?
Isn't that the same as somebody stealing something off my property or out of my house and the police saying they can't do any thing about it because I haden't posted the property .

Two weeks ago I left to go on a cruise. As I was boarding the ship my cell phone rang. It was the girl who was feeding my horses while I was gone. Hunters were on my property and left the gates open and the horses got out.

*The police said they could do nothing about it because my property wasn't posted. :(
* Isn't this the same as them saying the same thing if they had stolen or vandalized something instead .
What gives them the right to let the horses out just because the place wasn't posted.

Yes, if a car had hit my horse that they let out, I would be held responsible.

I feel that the police acted improperly and could have found something to charge the hunters with but since I was on the phone and headed out of the country I could not press any charges and had to settle for the police asking them to leave the property.

They tried to tell me that there is no law requiring people to close your gate if they open it and that I should lock it so to them it became my fault that my horses were loose.

WOW

I feel the tresspassers acted improperly!!! Our justice system is a joke, and the police have to act within the guide lines.

300UGUY: guy down the road came home one day and kept hearing banging. He finally went out to see what was going on. Some dip wad was putting{nailing} a tree satnd up {on his posted property} about 50' from his house .

I woke up one morning, looked out the front window, about gagged on my coffee. My horses were in the front yard! I managed to lock them in the barn, then looked for how they got out. What I found was that somebody had shot a deer either on my property, or on my neighbor's ( neighbor is an old lady that lives in Florida ) and the deer ended up in my pasture. So they cut my fence, drove their truck in, loaded up the deer and left. This was about 500 ft away from the house, but out of sight. I could have started a deer stand store with all the stands I have pulled outta my trees, not to mention ladders chained to trees. One of my neighbor's asked a hunter to leave his property, as the guy had ignored the no hunting signs. My neighbor is a minister, always very polite. The hunter was very belligerent. That night he heard some shooting. The next morning he found all 5 of his muscovey ducks dead on his pond. I could go on too long about this, if I haven't already. As I have said, go buy some property, especially within a couple hours of a metro area, and see how it works. I really don't want to be all negative, but until I bought my little farm, I never what a problem trespassing could be. It has gotten better, as I have rented the property out to a group of hunters. I hear about their arguments with the trespassers, but I am not getting my blood pressure up about it. And leasing land out for hunting is getting profitable - $30 - 40 per acre is getting pretty common here. I guess the root cause might be that there is not enough property availible.

These are some terrible stories! I'd be furious! What a bunch of @#$%! @$%!'s

There were some poachers on a farm near here last year. We just called the game warden and he came and gave them fines and ran them off. We are lucky around here I guess.

Crime rates in Canada are probably a fraction of what they are in the US. I believe the police there are less restricted than the US.

From the stories you guys are posting that must be the case. I was thinking about this all day yesterday. Man I don't know what I would do if somebody did that at our place.

The problem is, like always, it would be me who gets the worst end of the lawbooks.

I've hunted all my life. As far as the op goes, go buy some property in a deer hunting area, and tell me how that goes. Look at some of the postings on these boards - anything to do with trespassing gets lots of response. It is a real problem in many rural areas. There is a reason that virtually all private property is posted no hunting / no trespassing. Until you own some rural property yourself, you really don't know what we have to deal with. Most hunters I know are pretty reasonable, until it comes to getting a deer. Then everything is ok, as long as you don't get caught. We get a lot of guys out here from urban areas, looking for a place to hunt. They pretty much ignore no hunting signs, and when they get caught, they are pretty surly about it. It is hard to get the sheriff out here on these things, because they get overwhelmed in deer season. And as far as the op - google tresspassing south carolina - I get thousands of hits - it goes on there too. Unfortunately, a lot of people in our society practice situational honesty - they are as honest as they are forced to be. Like I said, go buy a few acres and see how many goofs you gotta run off. Then tell me what great guys they are.

First of all I am a land owner and hunter and DEER hunter. I've owned land and grew up in the country my whole life. I've hunted since a very young age: you might say I'm pretty tied to the land. I realize that everyone has a problem with "hunters" in their own area. It's apparent that you've had trouble in your area. What I'm saying is that by categorizing all hunters in one "bad" group is wrong! The ones you're dealing with are those "few bad eggs" that are in all groups of society. They 'Look" like hunters and are out to harvest some kind of game but are doing it in an unacceptable way! Ask any true sportsman or "hunter". Yes, I post my land. No, I've never had to run anyone off my land. I don't even hunt my own land. I do hunt others land "WITH" permission and have been turned down on occasion. I thank them kindly and look elswhere. I totally understand their viewpoint. They, as well as I as a landowner, have the right to turn someone down for hunting rights. Stereotyping is not the way to approach this issue! Being on the side of true hunters is.

Jayste: I don't believe anyone here thinks ALL hunters are bad. We're just saying there are more then enough bad hunters{Not real hunters} that it does need attention. I also hunt and have done so for years. As a good hunter I feel it is up to US{respecatble hunters} to straighten out the nimrods. Ignoring the issue will not make it go away and doesn't make it look good for true hunters.
