Preferred gas engines for 1 ton pickups

I pull 5000 Lbs. all the time with a 5.4 with 3.73 ratio limited slip in a F-250 it's hard to tell that it's back there. I've caught myself way over the speed limit of 65mph all the time not realizing it. I have to set the cruise on long hauls to keep from speeding it rides and drives so well. And on MPG.15-17 easy.

Why is that so hard to believe? 457lb.ft. out of a huge V10 motor. The 5.7l HEMI makes 407lb.ft with only 345 cubic inches and 8 cylinders... (1.18 lb.ft per cu. in vs 1.10 lb.ft per cu. in for the Ford) GM's 6.0l V8 makes 380lb.ft out of 366cu.in. (1.04 lb.ft per cu. in)

I was told yesterday that in 2011 model the v10 will only be available in F450's. No longer available in F350 models.

Well that would make sense if they release the 6.2l V8 and it lives up to the hype. It would be a great replacement for the V10. If they leave their Super Duty line with just the 5.4l and the diesel option, that would cut sales quite a bit.

I am excited about the 6.2l coming out but am not expecting much, Ford has left much to be desired with their new motors lately. I would wait for at least 2-3 years of production before buying one.

HP gets the credit and Tq does the work. The 5.4L is "behind"? Neither the 6.0L or 5.7L enignes have variable cam timing, looks like it's ahead to me. If you buy a pickup for TOWING based only on the PEAK HP ratings, well you aren't the market Ford is after. That must do a lot to explain the sales leadership of the F-150 for the past 30 odd years.

ROFLMAO! Have you ever pulled 6,000# with a "big block"? Those "big blocks" you think are so powerful made about 260 HP and 340 lb-ft of Tq input at the transmission. No one in 1977 thought that pulling a 6,000# trailer with a 3500 and 454 was "underpowered" and LOTS of people opted for the smaller v-8s because they recognize that they really only need the bigger engine 2 or 3 times per year.

There isn't a 1/2 ton pickup made that doesn't do a BETTER JOB towing than those old 1 tons did, and engine ratings are not a huge factor in that.

BTW, I've pulled 12,000# with 3/4 and 1 ton trucks and a "300-6" safely and for long distances and similar loads with F250 Power Stroke diesels. Both get the job done but one truck costs twice as much as the other.

I'd like to see your 300-6 and load on Fancy Gap grade on I-77. :D

I don't know the grade there but it was a S L O W crawl up the hill out of Stillwater at 4-6%, I can tell you that.

Thats a good one 77 Va. I will be doing that one here in a week or so. At least the load will be coming back to Ga. this go round.

7 miles of continuous 5%. Loaded semis are down in the 10-15 MPH range at the top of the grade. VA did change their signs on the grade recently which now allows pickups towing trailers in the inside of the 3 uphill lanes. If they can run 65MPH up the grade. Used to be over 3 axles and you were banned from that lane period.

Loaded to about 17K GCVW the 8.1L will top the grade at legal speeds+. Loaded to its max GCWR I'd bet it would be down in the 55 MPH range. There are videos of that grade on youtube from a guy running a light semi and someone running a pickup.

Dmace,

The hemi does not belong in the same post as the mighty V10. Heck, the hemi doesn't even belong in a truck.....:D

You sure get riled up talking about mopars but you are a truck guy and a tractor guy so you are cool by me.:):):)

Yeah, who needs 400+ lb.ft of torque in a truck when you can have a gas guzzling high maintenance V10 making just a little more but getting half the fuel mileage. You guys and your HEMI comments are quite amusing, I especially laugh as I pass you. :D

Engines have a different lifespan though. The V-10 will outlast the Hemi if the Hemi is made to pull its max rated load and the V-10 takes that same load. Same thing applies to running a Chevy 6.0 vs an 8.1. Even though both were available rated at 340 HP, the 8.1 was loafing along while the 6.0 was having to work its heart out. Now if the Hemi is so good, why isn't it listed for a 3500 for 2009 or 2010. Plus, when you load that engine down and make it grunt, the gas mileage will drop into the same range as a Ford V-10 or Chevy 8.1/6.0.
