A dangerous Beagle?? I know they are annoying as he;;, the barking of our neighbors went on for no reason for five years. Made me dangerous..:)

Jim , I missed that story last night (taxes). I'm with the mail man.

This kind of problem is so easy to remedy, I.E. good fence, There should not be these kind of incidents a commonly as they occur. Personally I don't like to chain up a dog, but prefer an enclosure. Some people, like my brother, believe they should be able to run free. For me that is irresponsible.

Not beating up, but there is an endless supply of the idiots who own these dogs. I think we need to take 'aim' at the source of the problem or it will always be the same problem over and over.

The article said the dog owner's 'could be ticketed'? How about - they could spend 10 years in jail? I'm sure every injury lawyer within 50 miles is salivating, but that is not going to prevent more idiots from creating the same circumstances.

How to reach these people who don't realize they have created and are feeding a time bomb is beyond me. It would be interesting to know the history of those dogs.

Anybody think it would be worth it to force dog owner's to take a 'dog safety' course before they could legally own a dog? It would be similar to a hunter's safety course. I hate to think more regulation is the answer, but we are fighting ignorance here. It could be funded through existing dog license fees. The answer to ignorance is education - if it 'takes'

Dave.

Dave, no offense taken. I have to agree on the owners thing but I'm not to keen on more regs. Of course, I don't have a better idea or solution.

Jay, when I saw that picture of your beagle in the snow, I told my wife that the perfect caption would be, "Can we go inside now?"

Jim, it's funny you mention that because "Shorty" has got it pretty good around here. Probably the best he's ever had it. He runs loose and doesn't bother anything or anybody...really, ask the neighbors they'll tell you the same thing. They evening feed him on occasion. Well, maybe we should ask the rabbits, squirrels and deer!:D He followed me home one evening after I caught and put up my neighbors horses. He's gotten in good with our other dogs and sleeps on a "heated", yes i said heated back porch! My wife has a huge heart and thinks these "babies" need heat. Our back porch in enclosed with a "doggie door" so 4 dogs and 2 cats hole up there every evening!

I wasn't even thinking of offending you, sorry. I am not keen on more regs either. Just tossing out ideas.

The shame of it is those kids that are killed or maimed/disfigured for life. Being an idealist - I tend to think there are solutions to most problems. This problem seems more related to the IQ level of the owner than to the dogs. Trying to think of a way to overcome that.

I hear that! Seems like the IQ usually matches the age of maturity in these folks. They seem to get the dog to make up for something else they don't have or to fill some insecurity they have. There! There's some real country boy psycho bable!:D

Hey, you are probably a lot more right than wrong. I don't get the motivation for having a pit bull either - unless it is to make money from dog fighting. Which is ugly and another IQ indicator.

Breeds can be banned, but it's not hard to create a dog that would be just as apt to be dangerous that is no particular breed.

This topic as been beat to death before, with nothing but insults against folks for owning certain dogs. I for one say this thread should be closed, before it starts un-needed crap again !!!

It is a shame what happened to the folks especailly the children :(

You hit the nail on the head.

Currently I have two. Actually they probably have more American Staffordshire Terrier in them than anything else. However, everyone just calls them a "pit bull" because not many people actually know what an American Pit Bull Terrier actually looks like.

One has only been in my care a short time and apparently suffers from seperation anxiety (requiring a lot of work, which is why the dog was probably dumped and apparently beated on, which the vet noticed while spaying her) and another here going on past three years. I never planned on "owning" these dogs or have them in my care, but they are here.

My own personal experince is that they are the most loyal obediant dogs I've come across.

Please, before we need to close this thread down due to arguing about "bully breeds", I guess they could go off on anyone at any moment, just like any other dog (NewsOK). Just as well as someone with a gun can go off and make the newspaper and then have the public wanting tougher gun laws.

Fact is "bully breeds" do need special care and training. Fact is some people are idiots and shouldn't own a dog, let alone having children.

with nothing but insults against folks for owning certain dogs

Comes with the territory.

Its a shame, things like this happen. In I think Pickens county AL an old man was attacked and eaten by some strays he was feeding. I only let 2 of my dogs loose at a time maybe 3 but thats too keep the crackheads at bay. I dont like to let them pack up when they get a pack mentality they are dangerous. Stupid owners are also a big thing that gets me. Last Heritage day My wife and I were walking Lilly my oldest white sheperd through the park after i was in the tractor parade. She has been walked t hrough crowds since she was a baby and is great in a crowd. I heard a commotion and saw 2 of the most pathetic looking teenagers Ive ever seen being drug by a slobbering pit bull. When I meet folks like this we just step to the side. We were waiting for them to pass an one of them said they had the baddest dog around. I had a bad feeling they came back and were hissing there dogtowards mine. I didnt want Lilly cut up so I told my wife to hold her leash for a second. i got my pocket knife open inhad it ready for what I thought might happen. They dropped the leash laughing and about the time the pb got there I drew back and kicked him as hard as I could with my steel to right square in the nose. He fell out and wimpered. I thought those 2 kids were gonna cry. They came over to get it back riled up and I told them if they wanted to keep that dog alive theyd better put it up. I I think most dog problems are owner based. I took in a pitbull mix someone dropped. He looked pitiful the neighbors all booted him around. When he came here I caught him trying to raid the chicken pen. Tank and Grommit were about the run him off and I picked him up and took him in the house . Hes like a kitten.

Please excuse me, when I said I don't get the motivation for owning a pit bull, I was picturing these kind of owners - not trying to put down responsible owners of any breed. Unfortunately for the pit bull and like breeds, when idiots get a dog, it is often a pit bull. How's that? Friendlier I hope.
