Northern living is definately not for everyone. You'd be surprised, though, how you become accustomed to it. We buy big coats, 4X4 vehicles, and good furnaces. The first snow every year brings out the bundled up people and cars litter the barrow pits of every road. By spring everyone's running around in light jackets and fully capable of maintaining the posted speed limit on ice covered roads.

I got a chuckle ot of this one... spoken like a true northerner like me!
Same here- I am continously surprised at myself-- some days it just shuts me down in temps of 40. Other days, late in winter with snow still on ground and temps are barely hovering over 35, I am loving it outside with no coat, just a long sleeve shirt doing stuff and being very productive. wierd huh?

That is how we are down here in the south when the temps hit 100. It just takes getting the body acclimated to the heat or the cold.

I've been there too. I spent two years in Thailand, and it never felt as hot as it did that first day when I got off the plane.

I remember one year when my old boss flew my wife and I to Pheonix to pick up a truck she bought and drive it back to Seattle. We flew down on my birthday, Oct 2nd, and when we got off the plane at 10:30 at night it was still 102 degrees out. It was around 40 when we got on the plane in Seattle. Too hot if you're not used to it.

I vacationed in florida in early march (first vacation in years) Man was it hot shorts and t's and sweat all day long. locals where in long sleeves and looked at us like we were nuts when we swam in the pool. Came home to a foot of snow and 20 degrees awww thats better!

Here are some more photographical updates...

The first is the walls after the forms were removed. The fluff on top of the walls is shavings that they put down over the concrete after it had skinned over to insulate and keep the heat for it to cure.

The second picture is the V-deck that they put down to support the porch cap while it cures.

The third picture is of the cement guys finishing the porch cap.

The fourth picture is the house tented while the cement set up today. There was snow in the forecast. My wife was quite distraught that she had no view out any of the south windows. The tent came down at the end of the day, though, so all is well now.

Looking good. I assume you got the tub/shower/what ever it was in OK before they poared the cap? I noticed that the section of wall which was cut has been removed. I saw the black hole where it used to be. LOL

Got the one piece tub/shower in...

Now I just wish I'd planned a little further ahead and replaced the old oil furnace earlier so I could have taken it out through the big hole. As it is, I'm going to have to cut it into many pieces to get it out.

I had to add this last picture of the skidsteer that they are using to clean up the dirt they pulled out of the hole.

I got a phone call at work this afternoon from my wife, "The skidsteer is driving across our lawn!"

Apparently the crew was in a bit of a hurry and left the skidsteer running between loads of dirt. (They're hauling off the spoils with a dump trailer pulled behind a pickup truck.) My wife sat in the car for a minute or two when she got home from running errands to let my daughter finish whatever snack she had. Everytime she looked the mirror, the skidsteer was in a different place. She was all fine with that until she realized that there was no one here from the crew. She got out of the car, and the skid steer was inching across the lawn right toward one of my favorite lilac bushes. She heroicly (she's now looking over my shoulder) climbed in the skid steer, gave herself a quick lesson in machine operation, and got it stopped.

Now I'm jealous because she has operated a skid steer, and I never have.
