Preferred gas engines for 1 ton pickups

For heavy truck usage, the Ford V10 is a much better engine in all respects than any hemi.:D

Everyone knows that.

Who said it isn't...?

Also, what about the V10 vs other 1-ton truck engines in respect to fuel mileage or cost of maintenance? I guarantee the V10 is not "much better", in fact I bet it's worse...

I can do $25.00 oil changes and the K&N air filter was a one time expense. I don't know of another truck engine that could be cheaper maintenance. Throw in a fuel filter every 30k and plugs at 100k and that is about it.

Fuel mileage is 9-10 towing fairly heavy and 12-14 empty in a crew cab 4x4. Others I know with 2wd or xcabs have seen up to 16 highway mpg.

I am just kind of messing with you and laugh that this thread keeps going. But seriously, is there another heavy truck gas engine that tops the v10?

I have 97K miles on the 4.6L Triton in my 01 F150 so far with no blown spark plug problem (yet). The plugs are supposed to be changed soon (at 100K miles IIRC). I'll probably have the dealer do that service since just my luck one or more of the old plugs will be stuck.

I am coming up for that service in my 00 F-150 soon. Not only do I plan to have the dealer do it, but I am going to ask him in advance what happens if there is a problem with getting the plugs out and the head is damaged.

I can envision a problem where they damage the head during the plug change but then try to claim that the plug was blown prior to them doing the work and that I should pay for it. In fact, the more I think about it, the more I believe that the shop that does the work is going to have to tell me in writing what happens if the head gets damaged during the service work. And give me a written statement that there are no blown plugs prior to them starting work on it...

Well, there is the 8.1 GM gasser, and the Dodge V10, but I can't remember many specs on the Dodge. But I would say that the 8.1 would probably top the V10 with it's 5 speed Allison.

Problem is the 8.1 was canceled about 4 years ago and the Dodge V-10 7 or so years ago. The only real choice for gas in a HD truck is the Ford V-10 until GM and Ford get the new engines out. I have not heard about Dodge coming out with anything.

I'm not a gasser fan at all, but I can comment on the tranny. If you get a v10 that has the Torqshift behind it, it is far better then the Allison tranny. I knew a die-hard fan, got the duramax with the allison behind it. Allison let him down 4 months after he got it. It took a year after making my 6.0(PSD) putting down 508hp/721ftlbs before it started to slip. The newer TorqShifts can handle even more HP/TQ with the proper tuning then the ones behind the 6.0 or the v8/v10s that were in the same model years as the 6.0.

Allison has a good fan following, but it just isn't all that. I'm sure I'm going to get some people saying this, that, and the other and I don't know what I'm talking about, but the Torqshift is definitely a lot better then the Allison. This isn't even getting into the tuning features of the tranny and with hauling ~16k worth of horseflesh and various Ag. goods, I rarely see hot temps with that tranny.

Why does this thread never die...

I never said it "needs rpms to reap a benefit" it just keeps making HP as it climbs unlike your "truck" engines that stop making power after 2500rpms or so. Look at the dynos, the HEMI is making the same power as the others but usually is a few hundred rpms higher. That's just the nature of the beast, the difference is after 2500rpms it keeps making power and doesn't stop until almost the redline. I said it before, I would rather have an engine made for high rpm durability that constantly makes power throughout the entire rpm range rather then some big block V8 that would fall apart if it ever hit 5000rpms and only makes power till 2500rpms then stops pulling. I have never gone above 4,000 rpms while towing, the truck pulls very hard from 2,000rpms up. Even towing it shifts at 3,500 rpms. 4,000rpms and higher is for the unloaded fun when I need a good kick in the pants. :D

These other manufacturers can't make decent power without some massive 6.0l or larger blocks and these big blocks still can't meet 2012 EPA requirements like the ole 5.7l HEMI. This engine will be around for a long time.

BTW, the new HEMI has the same gas mileage as the others and the same or more power...
A Big Block that blows at 5K? I better go out and tell mine it can't do that anymore. Mine will run thru the gears and shift at 4800 in most cases if floored or loaded. Yes I have a lead foot when it come to getting out on the highway and getting up to speed. At 65 MPH and loaded on a 5% grade, it normally runs at either 3200 RPM or 2800 RPM depending on the actual load. It will turn 4K if really pushed/loaded but that is rare. 4.10 gears and a Big Block 8.1L makes a durable combo.

As for HP vs cubic inches, a moderately loaded big engine vs a fully loaded small engine, big will last longer. A 6.0 is only .3L larger than the hemi. It isn't a Big Block. It is a small block just like the hemi 5.7L

I've got an Allison behind my 8.1L. It had 1 problem in 94 K miles. Fixed under a recall as GM found that some of the torque converter to flexplate and flexplate to crankshaft hadn't been torqued right at the factory. It also had the CPS replaced which was another recall item. 9 years since built and getting it ready for another 3K mile trip next week.

Mine had zero problems by that time. I had just installed the goodies right around there, so I still had another year of driving before it started to slip(~40k within that year, I spend a lot of time with my butt in the truck seat). Now the cummins auto and the 7.3 auto both crapped out around that time you had your one problem. 7.3 was burned up, and the cummins one of the servos was gone.

I have yet to hear of one problem where the TS did what the Allison did(on stock trucks mind you, not tuned, the TS only really likes custom tunes, not off the shelf tuners like Edge(which is crap on so many levels) to my friend after just 4 months. It was completely fried. Might have just been a fluke, but I never had a fluke like that with my TS.
