Newbie with a budget! 5 to 7,500 bucks!

Just want to say hello from Omaha,Ne 1st of all.

In the process of acquiring a 5 acre acreage. 1.5 of it is pasture. 1.5 of wooded area and 2 of good ole grass. The wife has given me a budget of 5,000 ...but I am sure I could go to 7,500 for the right compact tractor

I would love to have a FEL and MMM and 4wd would be nice too since I truly get all 4 seasons in NE.

Well, can I have my cake and eat it? Or do I need to buck up double what I have been approved from the wife?

Any suggestions as to models etc would be great. I really like the Kubota BX1860 and the B2320 (like the looks of it better).

Any help would be appreciated.

I was faced with about the same situation last year...

I had 3-4 must haves...FEL, 4x4, gear transmission....I originally wanted a tractor withabout 25 HP...

Having window shopped for almost 3 years I knew I would probably end up having to compromise on something to stay within my budget...

While traveling to look at one tractor I stopped at a previously unfamiliar dealer and found a deal I could not pass up...but I would have to compromise on HP...
I found a B1700D (4x4) FEL and gear drive for $5500 470 hours and in very good shape for a 1995 model (the dealer was selling it for an individual so I did not have to pay sales tax )

I compromised on HP (from 25 to 17) but the tractor has done an amazing job for me...sure I would like a few more horses but I could not be happier with my tractor...

The moral of my story is...if you have the time shop, shop, shop....the deals are out there...

Lotsa luck finding a $5K CUT or SCUT with FEL, MMM and 4WD. Rare as hen's teeth.

You have a fighting chance with $7.5K. For mowing your 2 acre lawn, find a used ZTR riding mower, maybe in the $2K range.

Tractor: look for a deal on a grey market tractor like Yanmar, Iseki, Bolens, or a Cub Cadet with an FEL. You might also find an old Ford 8N or 100 series with an FEL that you can afford. None of these will have 4WD so you'll have to beat the bushes more if you really want (need) that feature.

buy used. Even then.. if you need all that in the 5k range.. you will be getting into an older machine.

Zach, I sure understand the budget thing,I went through this when I bought mine as I went over mine also. I was looking for a 17hp like my dads, I ended up buying a B2150 which is a 24hp 4cyl. I am glad I did as there is quite a difference in the two tractors. If you end up thinking of going over, I have mine listed on the private ads here and on Tractorhouse.com with pics.(James McInturf) there.As someone else mentioned, you will see the price differences there. If the $5-$7k is in cash I would think about floating another $7k. You will never regret it and with 0% interest you could get a pretty nice tractor.

If 7,000 is it then you can look at 20-30 year old CUT with Loader and FWA and use a 3pt finish mower.

A John Deere 670 with FEL would work on your property quite well...solid machines and would fall within the $7500 (but $5K would be pushing it). A 755 Deere would be OK too...855 even better, but you're on the low end for a decent 855.
A little smaller in size (but not power) would be an early Kubota BX2200.

Any of the tractors listed above should fall within your budget. The Deere's use standard Cat 1 implements (my 670 handled a 60" rotary cutter on 5 acres of field (power line right of way) quite well). The 670 also shares many components of the 790 (and current 3005), so parts are available.
The BX2200 uses Cat 0 implements. These are pretty nice (first tractor I looked at, but I bought the 670) and would probably be the best bet for finish mowing (not so good for fields due to it's low ground clearance). It'll probably be the only one of the three I listed that will have a mid-mount mower as part of the deal.

So, yes, it's doable...you'll just have to look around. I also suggest you have cash in hand. Those nice little 670's and 755's sell quick.
BTW, that $5000-$7500 will get you a tractor...the implements may be extra.

I know you'll be tempted due to the low prices, but I strongly suggest you stay away from grey market machines. Parts and labor can be tough to find.
