I once hit a golf ball sort of in a straight line once, does that count?

Use to shoot at garbage bags thrown from the fantail of aircraft carriers using a 2" barrel 38. Could get close to 10' from hitting the target!

We used to do that on cruisers too. With a moving target and a moving platform, you were guaranteed to hear hoots and hollers if you got anywhere close to the trash bag. When we did small arms quals with .45 cal off the fantail, we always said you were qualified if you didn't miss the ocean. I did see one guy fail when he was so nervous that he dropped the .45 on the deck. Luckily, that was before he chambered a round and the .45 didn't go off. He wasn't allowed to stand any watch that required carrying a sidearm and he was taken off the emergency response team. I think that suited him just fine because he was terrified by guns.

Coolest shot was a rabbit on the run with my wrist-rocket slingshot using a pachinko ball for ammo. San Jaun Island, WA when I was about 16.

Best shot was during Gov training. A scenario running on a paper movie screen. Bad guy about 100 yards away. Head shot with my pistol as he peeked around a tree. The trainer rewound the movie showing my hit and said "I've run thousands of guys through this and have never seen anything like it!" I told him it was due to the excellent training I'd received_ and a big chunk of dumb azz luck.

One of the best shots I have made was my first deer. It really wasn't that great a shot, but it was my first deer. I was shooting a rem 870 smoothbore slug barrel and I was standing shooting unsupported. I watched a big doe come all the way in from 100 yards out to probably within 30 yards of me. My legs were shaking so bad I felt like I was going to fall over and I was wondering how the deer didn't see my legs moving so much. I took aim and she did a back flip then ran off twenty yards and fell. Shot her right through the heart. I was pretty proud of myself for not having hunted much and at sixteen it seemed pretty good. Something about a first successful hunt probably makes it more special than anything else.

My dad tops anything I have ever done.
When he was a foreman at North American Aviation in KC, Kansas during WWII he was a plant foreman and one of his jobs was to check out the .50 Cal. guns on the aircraft.
One day, just as he got ready to shoot, a rabbit cut across the field. They did manage to find some hair!
His best chance came when they bombed Pearl Harbor. He had just gone down with a flight of B25's but when the bombing started he was in a barracks away from the flight line. He said when he jumped in the bunker all he had was a beer can and a pocket knife but when he climbed out he guaranteed that hole was two feet deeper!

My best shots were with a Ruger .22 mag. A friend and I would find a little songbird sitting in a tree singing, and no, we didn't shoot the bird, we would shoot the branch out from under them. Really funny to watch and good practice.

Way back when I was a youngster with the Marines the Gunny was teaching us how to hand hold a 60mm mortar tube to get rounds off quickly, but not necessarily accurately. He went on and on about how much skill and practice it took to get close to a target that way...then he picked me to demonstrate his point. There was a stripped out yellow Toyota Corolla out in the impact area which I nailed with the first round! I didn't get a second round which was a good thing, cuz it was absolute beginner's luck!

Years later, with a lot more practice under my belt and a new wife I was hoping to impress, I hit a half dollar coin at 400 yards with my 6.5x55 Swede. I was stoked because that was a really nice shot! My bride just shook her head disapprovingly and told me if I was that good I could have used a quarter and cut my operating expenses in half! :ashamed:

Oasis, did you live on SJI then or visiting? I was born in Friday Harbor...a long time ago.

I stopped to pee in the middle of the night on the side of a county road in North Texas panhandle years ago and saw a coyote out just past the end of my high beams just standing there motionless looking at me, I could see a perfect side outline and his eyes just a glowing.

I got done with my business and I grabbed my bull barrel mark 1 Ruger .22 pistol turned the engine off and took a careful well aimed shot over the hood and leaning against the fender of my truck and killed it.

He flat dropped in his tracks one shot I couldn't believe my eyes. We figured it at about 175 yards I shot him right in the heart behind the shoulder exactly where I aimed using a bunch of elevation by pure luck. I couldn't do it again if my life depended on it lucky I had a witness.

This past weekend I made a shot while turkey hunting that I am quite proud of. The shot was at 75 yards using a Mossberg 835 3 1/2. I usually wouldn't have tried such a long shot but I had stalked this bird for what seemed like forever and this was as close as I could get to him. He had an 11" beard and 3/4" spurs. I put a .670" Comp-N-Choke on the gun before season so I will give most of the credit to that.

I am sure he will be delicious.

Not saying this didn't happen....but animals hit broadside, directly in the heart, seldom (if ever) drop dead in their tracks...especially with a rimfire 22....and at 175 yards to boot....and waiting for you to finish your biz. Good thing you had a witness.
