Just put taller tires on it, that might be cheaper if you need tires soon. You would still need to adjust the speedometer. I wouldn't worry about running it at 3000 rpms either, do you plan on doing 75mph with a load on the rear?

Soundguy,

Most of the F450's and 550's had some deep gears. I think they started at 4.56 or 5.18. Not sure if you could change the gears out, as thats not the same rear end as the F350s. I believe its a Dana 110.

Enjoy the truck! And don't be afraid to post some more pics!

My '99 F350 PSD has the 3.73 Limited Slip... that was standard on the SRW 350s. Its Auto and at 65MPH it runs about 1850rpm or so..and gets about 20MPG (not pulling anything).. regarding the position sensor others have noted, there was recall on that...take your VIN to any Ford dealer and they can tell you if it was changed out....still should carry and extra though....Has the previous owner done any mods to the engine???ie. intake or exhaust or chip???BobG in VA

more update.

I decided to do an actual road test vs calculating my rpm based on a lower rpm/speed.

at 70mph I'm turning 2750 rpm I guess that's tolerable...

That is more tolerable. While its still kind of high its well within the safe range for that engine.

Just think about your tractors running a Bush Hog. You are at 80% or more to obtain the desired PTO speed.

yep.. with that new info in the mix.. I may just leave the rear alone.

70 is interstate (legal) speed.. bumping to close to 75 will be right at 3000... if I'm running loaded I doubt I will be going 75..

I know it's tached out high.. but for practical purposes.. anyone know what the 'rated' rpm range for that engine is? tach red marks start at 3400.

also making me think about a synthetic oil too..

If you really want a better gear ratio for the back, just junk yard the whole rear end. The axle housing, brakes, everything. It's much cheaper than having just the gears swapped out. It would also be easier and cheaper to swap. The trouble is finding one close enough and in good enough shape to make it worth the trouble.

This is the same point that I was going to make on RPMs. Diesels can run high RPMs all day long. Just don't lug them. Also, high RPMs for a diesel aren't like high RPMs on a gas engine. IE: 3400 vs 5-7K. The point being that running 85% of redline on a diesel is quite a bit different than on a gas engine.

Ok.. I decided to run by my mechanic today. He runs a ford only service center. he used to be a mechanic at a ford dealership till he and a couple other mechanics went into business for themselves.

took the truck by explained my concerns..e tc.

end result.. he reccomended keeping the 4.88 rear, and turning 2750 for my interstate speed wasn't going to hurt the engine.

he mentione di might want to go to a synthetic rear lube, trnas lube and engine oil. but past that he didn't blink an eye at the rpms.. aside from the impact on fuel economy.

Showed me int he book where the vehicle is governed to 3600 rpm, and the book tells you not to exceed 3600 rpm driving.

I fell better about all of it after talking with you guys and the mechanic.

just got home and am now wireing up my 7pin under the bumper.

tomorrow I'm going to go possibly order the goosneck ball mount that fits my 5th wheel rails.. but first I'm hitting a trailer sales place north of town that strangely enough.. has a 5th wheel flatbed 29' with BT trailer suposed to be hd and good looking.. it's on consignment, and the seller apparrently needs cash badly listed for 5500$.. but the salesman said they had had no bites on it at all.. and indicated they would deal...

hmm... sounds interesting... would let me keep my existing 5th wheel without buying a gooseneck adapter...

I just got back inside form being under the truck.

I bought a nice pigtail with eht female end and mounted it to what appears to be the stock place on the hitch to hold a 7 pin plug.

the 7 pin wire ran down the frame and had a nice T to go tot he plug in the bed, and then kept going down the rail where it terminated into wire nuts / joined a 4 pin flat cable that ran out to a regular 4 pin cable by the hitch.

That is where I joined my pigtail. all ends soldered then sealed.. hooked her up to the trailer then tested all the lamps and brakes.. looked good. prodigy brake controller was more than easy to set up.
