There is a very simple explanation and that is your manual is wrong. Your engine likely takes close to 6 L of oil. The split sump is only about 2" so once you had about 3L in the oil level would be over the "hump" and equalize. Trust your dipstick over the manual.

bstrom - I still owe ya for getting wet for me :D

Thanks again guys!

Hey, no problem, glad it worked out. Didn't know about the split sump, guess the 2620 doesn't have it or at least doesn't have two fill caps to confuse a guy.

Yes - when I saw i made this ....mistake....I dropped one of the drain plugs and it flowed fresh oil so I am very sure its errrr in there however why no show on the dip - thats the thing that gets me.

Rotella gallon #2 going in!!!

So..........how much did you drain out of the beast???? My 3940 takes 8 quarts with the split pan.

For sure, you have enough oil in it now for a safe start and warm up.

I would run it for 3 or 4 minutes. Allow oil to settle for 3 minutes and check the dipstick. If a bit low, top it off. If a bit high, drain out. Done.

I wish I could tell - I drain into a Oil Pan that has a spout and poured it into a recycle barrel before I knew I had a issue so I really dont know how much came out. My recollection was more than 3.7 quarts.

My dealer confirmed this morning the 2920 indeed has two Oil Fills :D - lovely.

Sadly I didnt have enough of Rotella on hand since I used up some for my ZD21 Oil Change as well.

I would guess I have ~5 qts in the 2920 now and the dip says 1/2. So off to the store I go. I am thinking its at least 6 qts for a full fill. Not sure why the manual says 3.7 qts.

Yes - that will be my next action. I am thinking maybe the Oil level will come up after both sides of the pan mix.

Thx

I dont think it come up. It will go down when you fill the filter.

jambx,
I saw your post today. I'm glad you went first! When you get this completed please give your three or four step recommended order you would use if changing oil again. I'm past due on initial oil change on my 2920 and after looking at owner's manual I can see it is lacking in detail and makes no real distinction between models. I wonder if a shop manual would show the distinction between models for fluid changes (including hydraulic) in more detail? Has anyone used or could check a B2x20 shop manual?

If you put the oil into the engine via the oil fill on the rocker arm cover and the oil is not showing on the dipstick I would guess it went into the piston chamber(s). Please determine where the oil went prior to trying to start the engine. You can rotate the engine manually by placing a socket on the front crankshaft bolt and determine if the engine will turn over freely. If oil is in the chamber the engine will only rotate so far and then lock. If the oil is indeed in the piston chamber(s) and an attempt to start the engine with the starter is made, serious damage could occur. If the oil is in the piston chamber you will need to remove the glow plugs and manually rotate the engine to blow the oil out.

Ummmm......I hate how internet "tone" comes across sometimes but here it goes:

IF adding oil via the RA cover causes it to enter the piston chamber (sic) .....it's called a cylinder BTW......then you have a lot more problems than the possibility of hydrolocking the motor.

To the OP, glad it worked out for the good.

Yours is not the only model like that. I have a L4200. It has two drain plugs but only one fill. The owners manual says the crankcase with filter capacity is 6.3 quarts, but it takes a full 8 quarts to bring it to the full mark.
