Tractor gun, what do you guys think?

About 18 months ago I shot a mountain lion from my front porch.

It was stalking me and my two labs as I let them out for their evening stroll.

The range was 85 yards.

I say I don't carry on the tractor and yet hear I sit on the sofa with a 1911 on my hip. Hmmm.... It's late at night though.

What you are ultimately describing is a situation where MI state law differs from federal law, but both are valid at the same time. Under MI state law, the shotgun that you describe is a shotgun and legal to hunt with since you can't legally use rifles. However, under federal law, it doesn't matter what the gun is marketed as, nor does it matter what MI state law says it is, the shotgun that you refer to with the rifled barrel is in fact a rifle. According to Title 18 United States Code (USC) Section 921(a)(5), a shotgun is defined as a weapon designed or redesigned, made or remade, and intended to be fired from the shoulder and designed or redesigned and made or remade to use the energy of an explosive to fire through a smooth bore either a number of ball shot or a single projectile for each single pull of the trigger. Whereas 18 USC 921(a)(7) defines a rifle as a weapon designed or redesigned, made or remade, and intended to be fired from the shoulder and designed or redesigned and made or remade to use the energy of an explosive to fire only a single projectile through a rifled bore for each single pull of the trigger. So if you look at the federal definitions even though that shotgun sold by Browning is called a shotgun by Browning, it is considered a rifle under Title 18 USC Chapter 44, better known as the Gun Control Act.

Hey Tripler, Yikes, thats what I said the first time we had a 300+ black bear on our back deck only 1 foot from our french doors, which are about 90% glass .

Hey bstrom, Yes we have Grizzly Bear, but I have only seen Black Bear so far and that is just fine with me. Last fall, only a half mile from our house a lady walking her golden lab had a run in with a grizz. The dog went after the grizz, and I saw the repair job at the vet, must of been 300 stitches at least. The dog and the lady were lucky. The lady was ok as the dog got between them. Only got a visual on the lion tracks in the snow, as we usually do not go out after dark. We have a year around creek in the front of the house and the bear seem to use it as a trail. Fish and Game have some collars on some Grizz, and last year a few of them went through the area without anyone seeing them :shocked: .

That would be really neat though a little scary to live someplace with that diversity of wildlife. We have the occasional black bear come through, but all I ever have seen are tracks; my son saw one years ago; same thing with cougars. They have been seen, but the likelihood of encountering one is about the same as being hit on the head by a meteor.

The most dangerous thing we have are feral dogs.

We've had some cougar sitings in Maine including one on the coast but I don't think they have been confirmed. I've read it is coming back to it's eastern range. No Grizzly though! The occasional Black bear and moose running around here on the coast - much more inland. I like wildlife but being stalked by a mountain lion could put a damper on your day. A friend of mine here on the coast was getting firewood and got stalked on his back forty by two eastern Coyotes, which I guess are a little larger. One circled behind him while the other crouched, he was not to far from his house and walked in. He is disabled and has a cane sometimes. I wonder if they could sense that? Weird.

I live in Brookhaven, neighbor We have that same problem. EVERY year, we get several carcasses or just the whole deer with the antlers/hooves removed. I'm not a hunter since my father died, but it really sickens me that hunters do this.

Must be a MS problem. I live in Hattiesburg and we deal with the same problems. Years ago heard a shot, saw a truck go by and found the deer. Figured they would be back to look for it. Gave a little time and sure enough they came back through. After a short pursuit, we were able to discuss and reach a resolution.

Well, that sure sounds like govt. to me. If Michigan can call what the Federal Govt calls a rifle a shotgun, sounds like they could call any weapon what ever type they wanted. So I am hunting with what the Feds call a rifle, in a place that Mich. laws says I cannot use a rifle. By definition, they say in a shotgun area, that I can only use a shotgun, and then go on to describe the shotgun in such a way that is is by federal law a rifle. My head hurts........:confused2:

Ah, Great Selection, the Kimber .45 Ultra Carry, real accurate shooting carry .45. Only limitations on this .45 are the shooters. I carry one most of the time, not on the tractor mind you but just in case some of those BIG RATS try and steal or rob from me.
