Tractor gun, what do you guys think?

Folks that leave game animals are not hunters. At 10-15 feet I have pretty good faith in the Speer shot loads from a .38-.45ACP. My handloaded ones pattern pretty well at those ranges. I have a "CAT" brand vest that has a large pocket for a clipboard, or something. Most of my smaller guns (up to 4" medium frame revolvers) will fit in there with the zipper closed, and I've used that quite a bit around my place. I expect that something flat like my 3 1/2" 1911 would not "print" much either if I wanted to go public.

I keep a Glock model 32 in a permanately mounted Fobus Roto-holster on my tractor. When the key goes in the ignition, the handgun goes in the holster...always at the ready. I consider that particular handgun a necessary daily use tool for ground hogs, skunks, snakes and protection of property and person.

So then what would it be considered? I hunt deer with mine and it is perfectly legal because the State of Michigan defines it as a shotgun, not a rifle. Where I live, you can not use a rifle to hunt, just a shotgun. Hmmm.......

WB

The 1987 FOPA gives the states some leeway in reference to some aspects of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of which the 68 GCA was a component.

I imagine the confusion can come about if someone puts a rifled barrel on a shotgun frame such as an 870 as while it would have rifling, it would still be considered a shotgun. In most cases a gun will be designated as what it was designed and manufactured for. State and federal gun laws can often be confusing, so it is advisable to get something in writing if you have concerns.

One good example is the pistols now manufactured by Sig and others that are essentially cut down M4's, you can't cut an M4 down to that size, but as it was manufactured "as a pistol" it does not run afoul of the designation of a "short barreled rifle" which would be illegal.

As far as gun on a tractor. My other neighbor was bushhogging last summer and shooting rats with his .45 loaded with shotshells. Something happened and he shot himself in the left arm, fell off the tractor and ran over himself. Luckily the bushhog was not on. He has been out of work almost a year. He has had several surgeries and had Staph set up in his arm. They still don't know if he is going to loose that arm or not.

Thats a terrible story! :eek::eek::shocked:

From the Michigan DNR website:

All Firearm Deer Seasons - Shotgun Zone

In the shotgun zone, all hunters afield from November 15-30, and all deer hunters in this zone during other deer seasons, must abide by the following firearm restrictions.... Legal firearms are as follows:

  • A shotgun may have a smooth or rifled barrel and may be of any gauge.
It doesn't say a shotgun is or is not a rifle, it says a rifled barrel identified by gauge may be fitted to a shotgun.

And technically it doesn't include an option to use a .410 but you probably wouldn't get ticketed for trying. .410 bore - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia MikeD74T

I live in Brookhaven, neighbor :) We have that same problem. EVERY year, we get several carcasses or just the whole deer with the antlers/hooves removed. I'm not a hunter since my father died, but it really sickens me that hunters do this.

Not trying to be picky but these people are outlaws, poachers, etc. not hunters.

If I had more land where my tractor is, I could see about mounting my 1919 to the rops when it is lowered. Would look great pointing backwards. rofl... this has me thinking.

Hk21 up front and 1919 out back. :D

I do not step outside our home unless I have my Ruger Alaskan 44 mag loaded with Corbon 305 grain penetrator ammunition and my Taurus Public Defender Judge loaded with Winchester PDX1 .410 shotgun shells . They are with me when I am on my tractor also.
We have a lot of bears around and also mountain lions, and we also live about 15 miles from the Bob Marshall Wilderness. I have noticed when the deer are no where to be seen, it usually means there is a bear or lion nearby . The wife has bear spray stationed at each exit door so she can grab the can when she goes out. If I am in the house and need to send a bear on its way, I will grab the 12 ga. and put a rubber bullet round in there butt and they will leave in a hurry. When the bears are sleeping for the winter, I will switch out the Ruger Alaskan for my Ruger LCP 380. I also go outside with my early warning system, Hanz, my German Shepherd. :D :D KC
