Dan,

I'm not going to get into the hidden costs of fossil fuels and climate change and the consequences of discounting such problems. Suffice it to say..that's what elections are for.

What hidden costs? More like ignored costs IMO.

People need to care just a little. Sure, a tax is a tax. In lieu of a populace that wants to ignore the rest of the costs, it's easy to finger point taxes as the only evil.

A couple of thoughts here.

One, you have two votes, you vote for your favorite candidate for office and two, you vote with your dollars.

Two, you cannot legislate morality. Morality, often defined in a religious context, might also apply to the environment, etc., etc.

Perhaps one and two can be tied together.

That is true as far as it goes. Informed voters will make better choices. Persuading voters is as American as apple pie. We all have the ability to multiply our vote by persuading others. For every vote ever cast, there was a persuading factor that decided what the vote would be.

I have read posts that I think are nonsense, crackpot ideas, ignorant, uninformed or whatever. But every once in a while, I read one that changes my thinking - inspite of myself :)

It's not just Detroit, it's all of Michigan. Manufacturing is pretty much dead. The manufacturing jobs are still going down, employment is expected to continue declining until 2015. I really don't see any reason for improvement anytime soon. And that 2015 number might be optimistic!!!!!

Wow. In Texas the IH35 corridor is a very active area. Like that was a secret to anyone.
This is a very interesting map. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

One little burp out of a volcano in the north Atlantic spewed more carbon emissions into the atmosphere than everything man has done in a hundred years. There is nothing man can do to destroy the earth.

Taken from Kiplinger's Personal Finance:

For retirees with a steady income, Panama has the pensionado program.

To qualify, an individual needs to document a minimum $1000/month in pension and/or SS payments. Qualified American retirees receive discounts on such things as utilities, doctor bills, airline tickets and cultural events. Panama uses the US dollar as it's currency.

I don't know the numbers, but I continue to hear about US retirees who move to Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, etc. for a lower cost of living and tropical weather. It certainly can't hurt the local economies. The worst would be US driven demand driving up real estate costs.

Maybe not destroy, how about make unihabitable? I visited LA in the 70's & 80's. They had smog days there that literally took your breath away. You could see the haze on the expressway. People with breathing problems were advised to stay inside, or leave the area. That's why California has been the leader in pollution legislation. They were choking on smog. Maybe in your area of this country of 300+ million the air is unsullied, but many of our citizens are not so fortunate.

It took me 40 years to get to Texas on a permanent basis, don't count the two assignments while in the Army as permanent, I'll die here.
