Just upgraded my backup generator to a new Kubota powered 9.8KW set. I had a Deutz 8 KW aircooled diesel genset. The Deutz was a 3600 RPM and ran great, but it was relatively loud compared to the new Kubota. Water cooled and 1800 RPM make the Kubota the clear winner with low noise and improved fuel economy. I also added an auto start control to make starting for the wife easier. I have a manual transfer switch, so I do not have an auto power loss start, but a switch in the house can now start the genset, and have all of the protections.

BTW anybody interested in a Deutz powered diesel genset with under 25 hours, send me a PM.

Your new one looks nice. Did you do the change over your self or did you have an electrician do it for you? With only 25 hours on the old one did you not have many power outages? We have a larger gas one with transfer switch as we have been without power for up to 5 days. Happens when you get real wicked wind storms and you are in the bush at the end of a small feeder line.

I installed it myself. Already had the wiring from the old genset, so it was control wiring, redoing the fuel lines and a new exhaust line out the wall.

We do not have a lot of outages, but the few we have had have made the generator worth while. One summer day in the high 90's I remember, but the most memorable was about 15 hours a few winters ago. It was in the low teens and about a mile away a salt truck was going with the dump back up and snagged the feed line. Cold blowing snow outside, and nice and warm inside.

Mainly I have it for refrigerators in the summer and heat in the winter and water anytime. We too are near the end of a power stub that dead ends.

I get a little leery seeing all of the gas etc sitting next to it but that is just me being paranoid. Does the shed (?) have grills to let air in?

Usually, air cooled units (and even liquid cooled) are in an enclosure so that the fan on the generator can cause a flow of air to cool everything.

Luckily the shed has no gas in it. The red tank is diesel. There are some other combustibles, like motor oil, but I feel low risk.

For ventilation, I leave the the 8' x 8' shed doors open in the summer, and in the winter just cracking the door should be enough.

Just had a look at the specs. .41 of a gallon on half load is very impressive. Unless you have a heat pump or other large draw this will be very efficient for you.

Actually I have 2 heat pumps. Both geothermal units. I was able to run both comfortably with the 8KW generator, so should be easy with this new one.
