gpm gives you speed and psi gives you power. Of course a lot of other factors must be considered, but as a general rule thats the case.

To increase speed (change state of motion) you need increased pushing force.....see Newtons first law...

摘very object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it.

Increased flow is a result of the increased force...

Power is the product of flow and pressure. You need both of them to generate hydraulic POWER......it is OK to say that increased "gpm", or flow will give you increased speed, but you will need increased FORCE (pump shaft torque) to be able to increase the flow and speed

Having had to troubleshoot many hydraulic problems over the years, flow by itself won't do any work. It is the ability to make flow under pressure that does the work. I have tested many hydraulic pumps with a flowmeter that would make the recommended flow with no pressure, but as soon as you introduce a restriction, that flow it would drop to nothing. Most pumps are rated with a static flow at a given RPM and are expected to still flow at least 80% of that, up to the system relief pressure. Which also shows that pressure alone won't do any work, considering with the same flowmeter I can stop the flow and still have pressure.

Great post Brian!
A simple test rig for pumps, a Hedland inline flow meter, a pressure gauge, and a throttle valve...DO NOT FORGET THE SAFETY BREAKER/PRV....

see wdchyd's pictures on this previous post on another thread...

Don't mean to get off topic but how'd you reference just once post?

BTW, I really like this discussion:cool2:

hehe....no Cyril ...this is just a general discussion...but it might apply on your problem too....

Water wheels (hydrodynamic science) do not really apply on current topic

You mean I missed the word "Hydraulics" in the original post??:confused2::confused::)

But then I never could figure out which way the effluent flowed nor If one could push on a rope!:ashamed:

I think the story went to { Wheel Barrel } force at one time.

If you want to know which way the effluent is flowing, just look down the pipe when flushing.
