Why the whine?

I'd say 6-8 weeks ago, there was a thread about HSTs and the topic of the whine was mentioned, as is often the case. Someone gave a nice, brief explanation of the internal design that causes HSTs to whine. I cannot find this post, and was wondering if anyone else has it or can recall such an explanation.

The transmission pump/torque converter operates at a very high rpm and the oil really moves at a high gallon per minute/foot per second speed through small piping and control valves. The cooling fan adds to the noise as well.

My L3130 has some whine, more pronounced after it has been worked a bit when climbing hill.

It's not unlike the noise you hear when running water. Just much higher pressure and viscosity. Very normal.

Kubota uses Piston Pump/Motor Combo Units.....The noise you hear is the oil running thru the piston rotating groups......the whine increases with pressure/velocity/torque......and/or hyd oil viscosity

Though it's a torque converter of sorts, it works on a different principle than your automatic transmission...Hydrostatic transmissions

The direction of flow and displacement is changed internally in the pump using a swashplate design (controlled by your for/rev pedals moving a lever on HST).....NOT from "small piping and control valves"....

All this is normal in Piston Pump Design.......:thumbsup:
