I agree, but it depends how much the deposit was. If the guys busted the OP may just throw good money after bad.

Nothing wrong with going to his neighborhood and asking the neighbors a few questions like have you seen the guy lately? Did he have health problems? Did he die? Did he pack up and leave town? Nothing wrong with knocking on the guy's door and politely asking what's up. If you're afraid of false accusations have someone video the conversation with their cell phone camera.
Sure, you can hire a lawyer to do the same thing for $250 an hour. At any rate you need to know the contractor's situation before you can proceed.....does he have enough assets to cover his debts? Has he filed for bankruptcy? Has he died? Is he bonded? The answers to those questions will determine how you proceed.

The contractor's insurance won't help. Insurance is for liability and property damage.

If he has a bond with the city or county it may or may not help. Depends on how the bond is written. In my county we are required to carry a $10K bond payable to the county. So if a guy skips and leaves a couple of jobs unfinished and takes off with a couple of down payments the bond isn't going to do anyone much good but the county building department can say they've done all they could do to protect the customers.

If the customer required a performance bond for the project he should contact the bonding company and they'll get someone to complete the project. It's highly unlikely that the customer required a bond for his project, but that would have been the safest thing to do. If he has a performance bond for the job the customer shouldn't have any legal fees, or only minimal legal fees.

The simplest solution is probably to obtain ownership of the trailer and sell it. If the guy has filed for bankruptcy the customer will probably take a big hit. If the guy died he needs to file a claim against the estate. He'll probably get some or all of his money but it may take a little time.
