O.K. Let's tackle this loss of freedoms one issue at a time, starting with minors inhaling liquid nails fumes to get high. What is your solution to prevent minors getting their hands on liquid nails?

My solution would be to have a solid 2 parent home that taught the kids right from wrong and moral values and most of all how to resist peer pressure. Being brought up in a Christian home would help also. Ken Sweet

I think the main point that 20 20 is trying to make is that little loses of freedoms like anonymously buying liquid nails soon become big loses like WWII concentration camps (my example not his). So I think we should cut 20 20 a little slack since he has served this country to protect freedoms that many of us take for granted. :2cents:

 thanks, they don't have to cut me slack though, I joined a volunteer military MY CHOICE. You hit the nail on the head at understanding my point :)

If you don't mind, maybe we could also add the old saying "a comunity rasies a child". So if we see a gang moving in or a meth house maybe the folks should take a stand, not just turn their heads. I drove delivery truck in many cities{NY included} years back, on more then one occasion I witnessed something going on that should not have, I allways did my best to help the police find the punks responsible. I remember one time I was unloading at a store, and there was a theft going on right next to us. I told the folks to do something, "they said WHAT, no way, if we do something they'll come after us next." I'm sure those same folks wonder what is wrong with society?????

I am glad you asked that, and I don't really know all the answers{wish I did}. Before I go much further, what is to keep minors from buying gasoline and snorting that? Kids can buy a can of gas, spray paint, hair spray, certain cleaning agents etc.... but liquid nails is the cause of all doppers....,,. I find that hard to believe.

What if I had been out at my truck loading lumber but forgot the liquid nail, so I send my child in to grab it for me, he/she can't, so now I'd have to waste time{which for most is money} to go show ID for something stupid.

I understand we have issues with substance abuse but ID'ing a middle aged man won't do squat to stop the issue/problem. I quess maybe these abuse issue need to be 1st looked at in the home, oops I'm probably bad for writting that, how dare we place responsibilty for children on their parents. There is a small town south of me that has a huge abuse problem{lived there years ago, one reason I took my family and left}. No one can seem to figure out why, in reality all they need to do is look at the parents, {yes they're abusers also, or just plain don't care}. I allways found it funny{weird}, it's harder to get a drivers lic then it is to pop baby's out.

MossRoad, I quess my answer to your question would be start at the home. Then maybe have a better educational program to show kids what is wrong with substance abuse in the schools. I do strongly feel that ID'ing innocent older folks{for stupid stuff} isn't going to do anything.

I agree that it all begins at home. However, the fact is, many kids have no adult supervision, role models, etc... no one to keep an eye on them.

Alcohol and cigarettes require ID for proof of age.
Model glue and spray paint have been off limits to kids around here for years.

I really do not think that showing an ID card to verify age for purchasing items that are known to be used in prolific numbers by people seeking to get high is that big of an inconvenience and probably ZERO erosion of my personal rights.

Why is it out of the question to get our country back to where we have Strong family values and morals. I realize families are broken up. I have had that to deal with in my family. When I said "I Do" 45 years ago, I meant it. It should be that way again. Ken Sweet

Because there are no christian glue sniffer, right? Just kidding, just kidding. I strongly agree that the problems begin at home. A good, moral upbringing is very important. But the fact of the matter is there are currently millions of young (and old) people out there that are abusing inhalants. Something has to be done NOW to keep the inhalants out of the hands of the troubled youth. I don't mind showing my ID for proof of age for anything that should be kept out of the hands of minors.

IMO one of...if not the biggest contributing factors in the decline of social and moral issues is hollywood...i.e., mostly television...
Also, moral and social values have been reduced by far too liberal stances beginning with our juduicial system...

Half of all marriages fail. Half of all marriages succeed. Our priest told us that back in 1985. We celebrated 25 years last week. What time period would you like to go back to when strong family values and morals were the norm? We can find examples of bad morals throughout history. Our youth almost always seems better than our current age. Fact of the matter is most people are good people and tend to do the right thing. However, the population has tripled since you were a kid. That means there are three times as many bad people in the same space as when you were young, so bad morals seem more prevalent. That's why is seems so bad. If you look at it in percentages of population, however, things are not much different than when we were young.

WWII ended. The baby boomers were born. Their parents obviously were too lenient as evidenced by the moral decay of the 60's and 70's. The baby boomers had children in the 80's and 90's. Those kids are the current crop of glue sniffers and meth users and are birthing the current crop of children.

Which generation do we blame for the current state of affairs?

All I can go by is from my personal experience as a child. Knowing that caring, loving parents,Grandparents, teachers and Aunts and Uncles would find out, if I misbehaved, kept me out of a LOT of trouble. I also remember theoretically thinking about what would happen If I killed someone. I can remember as if it were yesterday, The Electric Chair. Now If you kill someone, a fancy lawyer may get you off on a technicality or the worst case scenario is they stay in jail and watch TV, get adult magazines, dope and play in the gym and even go to college in addition to free lifetime healthcare. All I have to say is "That ain't right" Ken Sweet
