today I had to do some mowing after work, so I decided to make a mod to the flex-link on the top of my 11yr old KK hog.. I added the lil tab on the U link so that it could not flip all the way down forward and bind. the newer ones already have this.

that lil bit of cutting used up all my oxygen .. which was 99% depleted when I was cutting apart the tin on my 950 the other day.

used the angle grinder to clean up the cuts and finish getting the doglegs free.

cleane dup the sat pieces and chased their threaded studs... tried to braze an ear back on the cast aluminum pedistal mount where one had a broke ear.. but no good.. i think the porous cast was just to oil contaminated.. no biggie.. I can make it work with a custom made washer and tab.. only a part of the bolt hole is broke out.

greased all the lube fittings on the tractor.. and that was about it.. waiting for parts before I can do much more usefull work on it.

decided to clean the fuel system on the 740 since I had it out to mow.

With your rate of progress, maybe this should have been titled "my fall project." :)

Very impressive.

Way to go, SG. You're really tearing through your latest restoration effort. I'm in awe.

Wish I had your skills in that area--I'm struggling with my 1951 Minneapolis Moline BF restoration. Finished painting the last part today--the radiator frame (Prairie Gold II color like the rest of the tractor except for the wheels which are cherry red).

I heading to the machine shop now to get some advice on getting the U-joints on the propeller shaft disassembled. May have to cut the spiders. Need to get those joints rebuilt so I can start reassembling this puppy.

today was a good day.

got 2 big boxes of parts in from a tractor buddy, so headed out to the barn after I got home from work.

I recieved front and rear fuel tank brackets, a 12v gen from a diesel 01 series, plus brackets, and some sheetmetal goodies.

Since I had to do a lil custom drilling, tapping, and rethreading a few of the brackets had to be adjusted. mostly just enlarging holes or adding a couple washers here or there to make things line up. that one front fuel tank bracket mounting point in the head with the rim of the bolt hole broke out, I ende dup welding a small tab tot he fuel tank bracket and drilling down thru the broken ear cross section, and installed a 1/4" stud... worked out great.

I also recieved a 01 series fual tank and battery box from another tractor buddy, and started adding those. again.. a washer here or different than oem fastener there, and it all finally bolted up. poor machine is a 'reverse parts machine'.. it has stuff on it right now from 4 different machines not including it's own parts... also another reason why a few things had to be persuaded into place.

I went ahead and dropepd the lil 4 bolt access panel under the crank pulley so I could change out the ratty fan belt easier and clean up that area a bit as they tend to hold gunk.

original bracket at the front of the muffler over to head/fuel tank bracket is gone, so I made another.. just hav not installed it yet. I'm also fabricating a heat shield that will go over the muffler. I've already cut it out of some thin-ish sheet metal stock I had, and will drill it and roll the edge over tomorrow.. er friday.. I work a double on thursday.

I have an old metal fuel line from another refurb I can adapt for this one. replaced the oring on the new-to me- fuel tank tap.. looks like it is fuel tight

going over her I discoverd a broken off grease zerk in the 3pt leveling box. hit it with some pb to soak and I'll deal with that another day. I actually have a set of zerk extractor especially for that.. and if not.. I can always drill it out.. :)

looks like I have about 4-5 small tack welds I need to do ont he tin to stop some cracks.. and other than that.. it looks like I am down to sheet metal refinishing, and then reinstalling the radiator and fan.

whew.. I'm pooped..

got home from work at 10:30pm.. didn't feel tired.. so got the grubby work clothes on and went out to the shop.

I had a few things on my mind to try.. I had picked up a decent looking set of wire cups, and wheels, knotted and straight, plus a couple arbor adapters. these are made to fit 'most' 4.5" angle grinders.

I figure these things will tank paint off good.. but I didn't want to tie up my good angle grinder with one of them..

I had a box of 3 broken chinese angle grinders, and decided to see if I could make 1 from 3.. and did.. armature from one.. head from another and field and brush body from another. it has 2 handles, and is quite decent looking. i fit the biggest guard of the 3 on there and then the knotted wire cup. use dthe best of the 3 sets of brushes.. etc.

bottom line.. it ran good. still wasn't tired.. so dug around in my goody box and found some 'still good' black 3m pads, so chucked one intot he drill press, then adjusted belts for high speed. proceded to stript he doglegs, dash, dash cowling and nose piece down to shiney bare metal. did a small bondo repair to a ding int he nose.. came out awesome, and hit it with 80, 220, 400, then 800 paper.. dash cowling is a spare one I had, and is in better shape than the one that came witht he tractor.

it has 2 cracks i will need to drill stop and spot weld, otherwise it's good. i had a spare dash as well, and it's in about 5% better condition than the one that came on the tractor.. so again.. I used my spare.

.. after that i laid the hood center section up on the bench and started at it with the knotted wire cup.. then my internal buzzer finally went off and said.. ok.. your tired!

here's a progress pic!

sorry about the size. my usual upload place is having some repairs done.

I have the tinwork dry fit on the tractor right now with the fasteners loose, just to check fit.
