7018 Vs. 7018AC, Need Layman's translation please:

I fabbed up this 'hook plate' for my L35 and have abused it beyond belief, and it's still holding fine.

Welded the lift arms back together and was totally disappointed with my work after they broke again.

It seems like I failed on numerous points: lack of penetration, contamination of weld, improper beveling, and that's what comes to my mind for starters.

I DO KNOW that I absolutely try to hold fast to cleaning the site of the weld thoroughly and removing ALL slag before running another bead.

Ah well, try, try again...

Well,the orange welds look good to me and looks like[from what I can tell] run hotish,,what is that,,stick or mig? the other thing was stick,,right? And thats a good clue,,you can make a weld and a weld that holds,,,but don't let it get you too far down either way,we all got things we need to learn,,trouble is remembering it. If that was cast iron,,most welders wouldn't even try on something like that,,cause welding up broken cast iron is a lost art,,and we hate that fail thing,,,don't we??

I have bent enough of those things and broken them to know they aren't anything but CHEAP plain mild steel. That cutter isn't as old as it looks. Its been neglected, rode hard and put up wet. Just put the turnip greens on....mmmmm......with roots chopped up of course.

I will do that,,got kale,turnips,greasy,and mustard[only thing I can tell the difference is kale and turnips,,but knowed what I planted],,can serve fresh deer loin with the greens too,,and of course biscuits.

It looks to me like it is made of mild steel that has work hardened. The surest bet for a repair is to make new arms. That said if I needed to use it and was to try a repair I would preheat then weld it with 6011 and 7018AC(easy rod) and let it cool slowly. I know its mild steel but its brittle. Thats just a shot that may fail and for me it wouldnt be the first time(failing that is).

Yeah,,,probably is,,you reckon they ever made brush hogs out of cast iron??no.....but I'll tell you one thing,,its probably easier to find cast iron now than it was 20 years ago,,,go to lowes and look at their hand tools,,,,any castings are probably cast iron,,yes,,from china,,,,so,,maybe,,we could find cast iron,,in the new cutters?? from,,tractor supply,,or,,whereever??

Easier to read how to do it,,,than do it,,,and you never know who mighta wrote that to begin with,,,,,,,so,,tell us how you do that than,,,[now don't say drill holes]:laughing:,,and don't tell us about preheating,,,tell us how you weld cast iron,and make it hold in a stressfull situation,,,I've done a little of it,,but as all modern type guys/welders,,we have lost the incentive,,,,so.... tell us,,pictures would be nice as shield arc says.

The gear boxes ARE cast iron, but that's about it.
