Ethanol on the Ropes?

There are many things that "are said". Most of them are false.

"Primary energy inputs"? I haven't seen any tractors or trucks running on coal or NG. Yes, fertilizer may be made by NG and it is used for drying the corn. I'm really dubious that much coal is used since coal isn't readily available in most of the corn belt.

i don't think there is "land sitting idle from not growing tobacco".

#1 - under the old system, tobacco was mostly grown on small plots, quarter to one acre plots, usually on ground not suitable for growing anything other than pasture.

#2 - under the new system (which is still strong), tobacco is being grown in larger fields.
It was not me who said that, I just replied to it.
We have rail road in these parts of country, mostly coal riding its rails.

As they should, if a product can't stand on its own, it shouldn't stand at all.

Like it or not oil is the only energy product that can stand on it's own right now.

You are going to have to explain that, please.

Please help me understand what job?

a subsidy is money taken from a working taxpayer and spent 'for him' by the government (after gov't expenses). if he were left with his money to spend on his own, he would spend it on something else, creating work in the real economy.

With or without subsidies oil is a viable product. Right now oil companies are reporting record profits.

I know what you are saying, and to some degree agree. I am afraid that if we did not use subsidies, some of our economics would never have got going. Subsidies on many things should have got cut back same percentages as the Bush tax cuts that was to be good for business. Instead government increased in all kinds of directions, not just subsidies. And does not appear to be getting better. Subsidies to ethanol will not come close to reaching proportions of wall street.

Like I said earlier. I would like to see subsidies to get e85 pumps all across the country. If the pumps are there then more car mfgs would be making cars to burn it.

If it's a good idea, then why aren't companies doing it without subsidies to make a profit?

Gore has already admitted that ethanol was a lie. Why should we spend even more billions of dollars to finance that lie even further?

Oh, he said that corn ethanol was a bad idea, but now his latest project is worthwhile. Of course he lied before, but now he's telling the truth?

You think there's any possibility that he (again) has an ulterior motive that has nothing to do with the good of our country? Oh, I'm sure "Honest Al" would never do that....(again).

That's the tobacco you know about. Tell me what you know about flue cured? The highway I live on is 3 miles long. At one time there was 155 acres in this little stretch. Go in to NC. and you'll find one area that's been abandoned. Thousands of acres of flat farm land just growing up in weeds and brush. Whole towns gone. In 1979 the county I live in produced more tobacco than is in the state of Va. now. All we had left for ag was cattle and the price of corn, fertilizer and fuel has just about finished that off.
