How much post hole digger can it run?

It doesnt take much power to run the auger but you have to be careful that it doesnt screw itself into the ground. Hold it up after it goes in about a foot and dont let it freewheel especially in soft wet clay or it will screw itself into the ground and since your PTO doesnt have a reverse, the only way out is to take a pipe wrench and reverse turn the PTO shaft to get it "unscrewed". Having done this a few times, I can tell you first hand that you wont be able to turn the auger if it is in up to the gear box. You will appreciate how much work this is after the first time and be more careful on future digs. It can happen in the blink of the eye if you are running lots of RPM and the dirt is hard on top and then gets soft, when it starts going it will go in before you can stop it. By the way, my first auger in was with a 90 HP tractor and it wouldnt lift the auger out till it was at least halfway out of the ground.

Great input...never used one but I can just "picture" the auger screwed into the nasty clay! It would be a real mess getting it back out. I assume you just run in a short distance and then pull it up to clean off the dirt...and then do another piece...at least in wet, gummy clay? Thanks...Tom R

I am still sitting here picturing a post hole auger driven deep into my really tough, gummy, hard wet clay...it would be just like a big lag screw powered into a huge beam...with no reverse on the ratchet :) Tom R

It would require a long pipe wrench for reverse. Read that somewhere recently.

The PHD actually belongs to my son, I just borrow it when I need it, he bought it at TSC, don't know the name brand.
More than likely a Landpride, thanks.

From reading I thought one of the "limiting factors" on "how much" was the ability to get the auger pto box high enough so you could easily get the auger in straight. Thus on the smaller BX's they have enough HP to run a bigger auger but getting it off the ground was the problem.

The pictures I posted is a full size PHD on a BX2200, the second picture shows plenty of ground clerance.

I have drilled hundreds of holes with my PHD and never ...ever gotten it stuck in a hole..All you do is when you want to remove it from the hole you have drilled is keep it turning and lift up on your 3pt lever but be careful since if you come up out of the ground with the auger spinning loose and wild it can go anywhere...keep in mind the hole you are drilling is all that keeps the auger under control, once you bring it up above the lip of the hole ...all bets are off and it will swing wildly so you have to be careful in raising it up as you put the power to it through the PTO..

I talked to a professional fence intstaller once about the dangers when he was using a post driver to put some posts in for me that I could not get to about and he said the most dangerous is the PHD...not the post hole driver. Drilling is more dangerous than driving !

This type of auger makes a huge difference drilling holes. The staggered teeth don't walk when starting a hole and take less power to dig. This is a Bush Hog auger with Bear Claw replaceable teeth.
