Chainsaw Bar Oil ??

I just put some new motor oil in my junk plastic Poulan Lowe's special because I was out of chain oil. The saw was about half full of chain oil so I topped it off with motor oil. That saw gets abused and if I dropped several hundred dollars on a saw, I'd never use anything but bar oil. With this one though, I'm not to worried about it. The downfall is, the oil slings off of the chain a bit more than I care for, but it worked in a pinch.

That's when I found out the difference.
I was helping a neighbor cut up some trees and ran out of bar oil. He said, here use this, it's used motor oil that I filtered. I figured.....what the heck, I'll give it a shot.
My bar got hot, the sprocket tip got hot, chain got hot, and it didn't cut well at all.

Last year I started using 5-30W motor oil because I had it on the shelf for several other things and vehicles. I don't use the chainsaw a lot, just for my own firewood. I wore out a bar sprocket tip. Local repair shop didn't have a new tip so I bought a new bar. This year I still used the same motor oil and the chain would get very hot a came loose during the first cut. I would keep adjusting the chain and go again. Sometimes the chain would come off. It also did not cut well at all. The new tip wore out and plain to see the bar had a lot of wear on it. The drive sprocket was bad shape now too. The shop put a new srocket tip on the bar and dressed up the edges on the bar. He ordered a new drive srocket for me which I put on when it came in. While I was there I picked up a gallon of bar and chain oil. After using the bar and chain oil this season, I have not had any problems at all. The chain doesn't get hot and loosen up anymore and it cuts good. So I will continue to spend a few dollars on the right oil now. Just my own opinion

I know some people around here that deep fry there turkeys around this time of year, I get there 3+ gallons of peanut oil for free. I strain it through cheese cloth and it works great for bar oil, eco fine and a couple of gallons lasts me all year. Several loggers in the area take all the rest off my hands.

I've read all 7 pages of this thread and it amazes me. Now, I can understand using some other kind of oil in an emergency but there are people on here who spend hundreds upon hundreds of dollars on a chain saw and then try to save a buck by using any kind of junk oil in it that they can get their hands on. Peanut oil, used motor oil, hydraulic fluid, why not extra virgin olive oil or Crisco? Come on, somebody has to have tried that ....

Spend the extra couple of dollars and get the right oil for the job. End of story!!!

I've read all 7 pages of this thread and it amazes me. Now, I can understand using some other kind of oil in an emergency but there are people on here who spend hundreds upon hundreds of dollars on a chain saw and then try to save a buck by using any kind of junk oil in it that they can get their hands on. Peanut oil, used motor oil, hydraulic fluid, why not extra virgin olive oil or Crisco? Come on, somebody has to have tried that ....

Spend the extra couple of dollars and get the right oil for the job. End of story!!!

i run all Stihl saws and would never think of using a different oil,bar oil is desighned......for......this.....use,,it has tackifier's in it so the oil is thicker and sticks/hold on better to the bar and chain with out slinging off as much thus protecting against wear better.

i wouldn't even use another oil in a pinch,the saw would stop till i had some.

And if I had an expensive saw I would not use anything else, either. But it got me through until yesterday when I went and bought a bottle of bar oil. A lot of people use motor oil and have for years, with no issues. Guess it's whatever you want to do, it's your saw...

No, I'd say that's not true. I've done it and I'm smart enough to know not to put 2 stroke oil in a car engine. I also know how to properly adjust my chain to keep it from falling off. It's oil, and the only difference is the tackiness. Regular oil slings around more and runs out quicker but it still lubricates the chain. If you are burning things up and throwing chains, maybe you should learn how to adjust your chain instead of blaming the type of oil you use.

I'm not telling anybody here to use anything. Like I said, it's your saw so do what you want to with it. Funny how some people can use vegetable oil and never have a problem, but others blame their lack of mechanical skills on the oil they use. Them are the people that probably don't know the difference between a screwdriver and a box knife, right?

Last year I had to replace the oil pump ... It was suggested via the net that I should use Cold Weather oil ... asked for it at the Stihl dealer. They didn't know the difference.

a dull chain will burn up a bar and chain real quick. If your saw is making dust instead of pulling chips you might also need to learn how to sharpen a chain. Bigger the chips the better your filing job is.

There are four modes of lubrication:

Hydrodynamic
Elasto-hydrodynamic
Boundary
Extreme pressure

Often several modes co-exist. Different additives are used for different
modes and depending on what you are trying to achieve with the lubricant in
use would decide what additives you use in that formulation. One example
could be are you looking for controlling wear or reducing the co-efficient of
friction between mating parts, they are not the same thing. Or do you need
a friction modifier for use with wet clutches, limited slip differentials or wet
brakes. Or do you need a dispersant, as with engine oils to control dirt
deposits in the engine.

By saying oil is oil is analogous to using a box knife as a screwdriver.

I have an expensive poulan wild thing that has only had canola oil since new but now that she is getting older maybe I should switch her to extra virgin olive oil.

Course she has never tasted wood either, just moose n buffalo:laughing::laughing:

Like the op was told, I too use "used" engine, hydraulic, gear and even regular bar oil. I sawed professionally for years and only thing i found used oil not up to was falling large stressed, dying timber where the pitch would gum up the bar/chain faster than with bar oil. I had my chain oiler adjusted to run out of oil 'bout the same time the saw started running out of gas.

Chains would stretch the same with used oil and in COLD winter weather, used oil poured easier than the gorilla snot that regular bar oil would turn into. Winter grade of bar oil looks a lot like new engine oil or hydraulic oil...... Hmmmm

As far as polluting the environment with used oil, ever see the color of the water in the puddles of wal-mart, malls, grocery stores and gas stations or any parking lot? Just what makes that funky colored water...... Hmmmmm
