Going into my 2nd witer winter the 240. Last year anything under 40 degrees and it would not even think about starting unless I used the TS. Even then it was like pulling teeth. This year It'll start like a champ as low as 30 so far. I haven't even filled the TS reservoir yet. I'll just wind it up till the oil light goes off, let go of the decompression lever and off she goes, banging on one cylinder for a sec then purring like a yammer hammer should. Haven't done anything different other than I haven't been using Power Service in the fuel lately. Not complaining by any means, just thought it odd.

Have you changed the fuel filter lately?
Or moved any wires to the thermal start?

Nothing done lately. Checked fuel filter-all is fine. Just run it and keep the fluids clean. I bought this tractor last fall (2009). Maybe it just spent too much time sitting before it came here and started working regularly? Cleaned the cobwebs out of it.

Better compression.

I was going to say that it just needed running to get back going good and get carbon and cobwebs blown out as well as maybe cleaning out injectors from usage. Didnt you buy it after it had been sitting up or partly in disoray if i remember?

Maybe corrosion built up on pos/neg..burnt off..and now getting good connect.

Did you go to a different oil weight????

Same oil as always. Rotella 15W30. I did run it pretty hard over the summer. All that excercise must have improved its health.

I found that a lighter weight oil and less oil in crankcase (1/2 to 3/4 qt) will aid in better starting in excessive cold weather.

I can understand the lighter weight oil but how does the less oil help?

My guess would be less time that the crank dips into the oil? I think id go to 5w-40 or 0w-40 before i filled my tank 3/4 of a quart low. Thats not too good for the operations once warm.

Unless you got an oil burner, you should be ok doing regular tractor work. I've been running my 1500 1/2 quart low in the winter and 1/2 quart over in the summer to control temp for six years. No leaks, no oil burning, no engine problem. The 1/2 quart in the summer will drop temp about 10 degs when outside temp in 90 or better.

Yes I do change Viscosity from summer to winter most years. I did not this year and had to have some help starting. (Added thermostart and used a booster or block heater on the real cold northwest Georgia days).

No oil burner just my thoughts on the lubrication. I stay at the mark i put in for the entire 50 hours of use i put on my oil.

It's nice when that happens. Maybe it's not so rare though, because I've seen a similar thing too. Where I see an old, ragged running, hard-starting diesel and after working hard for a season now it runs better in all respects. I've always attributed it to using new diesel fuel with all the modern additives. New fuel not only volatilizes easier, but today's stuff also cleans up the old injector nozzles so that the spray pattern is right again.
