Now I know why the last 2 out of 3 GM vehicles I have owned used a qt of oil every 800-1000 miles. I had not heard of this.

Chris
Yep, bought a brand new 2002 chevy silverado 1500 with the 5.3 engine and with 28,000 miles I was going threw 1-1.5 quart every 3000-4000 oil change mile change.GM told me it was normal,I think not.coobie

While the tranny may be part of the equation you know darn good and well the altitude had more to do with it. I have nothing bad at all to say about the 6.0L GM motor but its not a Ford V-10 or a 8.1L GM. Its comparable to a 5.7L Dodge and a little better than a 5.4L Ford.

GM stacked the test in in their favor. Ford or Dodge would do the same thing. When these test are run by a independent firm there is always one that does this better and the other brand does that better. GM just picked the test they were better at. That simple, and if you think otherwise I have been giving you too much credit all these years we go back and forth.

Chris

Excuses. Only thing I know good & darn well is GM beat Ford with less HP & TQ. You can than a better transmission for that. :)Quote all the brochure HP you want, Chris, but GM ate Fords' lunch.

I can't tow Ford's record sales down the road, only a payload on a trailer. If Ford could beat GM and stack a test in their favor, why haven't they done it? Chevy proved itself to non-chevy fans.....buy or believe what you truck want.

45,000 on my 5.3 in my Tahoe and over 100K on my 1500 Silverado and not a drop used between changes.

Different strokes for different folks.
I agree,blonds,burnettes & redheads = Dodge,Chevy and Ford.LOL,coobie

To be honest I have know lots of guys with 5.3L's and none of them used oil. The 6.0 was hit or miss. The 8.1L and many of the GM 1.9L and 2.0L 4 cylinders did also.

My 5.3L doesn't use any oil. But it has "slapped" since new. I noticed it and took it for what its worth. 148K miles later, it makes all the same familar noises, but still doesn't use a drop of oil, gets decent fuel mileage and drives like a hotrod.

I'll be honest, it had me worried at first, especially after the factory warranty was up. But really, it hasn't been much of a concern lately. If it throws a rod through ther hood tomorrow, I'll be very bummed out, but its given great service to this point.

Each brand/model/year has their issues, so its no use pretending one is better than the other.

I have a Y2K GMC XL 2500 with the 6.0 and 3.73 gears, it tows a 7000 lb TT easily. I have never had any engine problems whatsoever although I have heard the 6.0 may be prone to oil usage...but mine probably has the lowest mileage of any Y2K models around...36,000, still, I change the oil (Mobil 5W-30) once a year using a K&N oil filter. Annual mileage is under 1,000 now that I am retired, but it's mostly towing miles.

Update. I found an 04 Chevy 2500HD and went with it. Crew cab, 4x4, loaded with 100K on it. It has the 6.0 and was obviously never worked hard, just driven so I brought it home from Nashville Friday.
