Tractor weights

It's really not a big deal to pull with the front in the air. I do it all the time to get more lift on the object I'm pulling by attaching the chain higher on my tractor. I've even hooked a chain 7 feet up on the top of the ROPS! However, when doing this, I go very slowly.

Most the flip overs I've seen are 2wd ag tractors. Makes sense because the older utility tractors often don't have a decent low gear, the ags get too much traction and there is no weight on the front. Someone said you have a half second until the point of no return. Probably true on one of those older utility tractors.

Not on my tractor. I could drink a cup of coffee while I watch the front come up in 1st gear. I could just watch it and say... I'll get to that in a bit, right now I'm enjoying my coffee

The best way to lessen the danger of a rear flip is to use a tractor with hydro instead of a gearbox. When you feel the front getting light you just lift your foot.....

can a hydro tractor lift the front??

Just kidding with you! ;)

Second all of what Island Tractor said.

Yes, lightweight tractors. used "properly" can pull just about "squat".
That isn't justification for using them "improperly" to pull n times squat.

We just DO NOT KNOW when we are going to hit that magic combination of factors (including the 3pt carry & drag) that result in a flip over.
It might include a gopher hole, a root, whatever... what I do know is that I can improve my chances by eliminating the factors that I can control, PARTICULARLY 3pt carry & drag.
The "always got away with it in the past, so I must know what I'm doing" syndrome is just a statistical clear spot, the exactly wrong combination of factors will get Ya one day.

Too many folk on this forum with too much confidence in their "abilities" to overcome both physics and statistics (-:

Toffy, impressive weight setup with the wheel weights and the silver bars! As another said I think you're getting the maximal capability of your tractor.

As to the sidebar discussions I would still call myself a newbie after 5yrs of tractor and excavator use. It is these sidebar discussions from experienced members that flush out the do's and don'ts for me. As long as they stay factual and non-personal I learn a lot from you folks. Thanks.

Not bad for that little machine. I have trouble skidding 30 footers with my OC3 and D2. But then again most everything we cut here is 30 to 50" and oak or hickory and never de limbed. Was thinking about using my JD4100 to move smaller stuff, but I fear that there is not enough rear-end to get itself out of trouble. I'll stick with track tractors for pulling, and let the deere keeping eating (cutting) the grass.

I like you already

I prefer the deer in the deep freeze.
