I sure can't beat the advice given by James.

As to the pond, my son and I just spent two full days mucking out a very small pond, less than half an acre with our L5030 and M8540. While it was fun, we really didn't have the time to finish it the way we wanted and next time will probably rent an excavator.

My pond is maybe half an acre probably smaller and i don't have a certain time to have it done. I could spend an entire summer doing it haha. My dad bought me this tractor for Christmas, which I'm sure it was part of his christmas to. I'm just going to do little things for fun.

Our loader is a la524. Are these loaders any good at digging out areas, we are wanting to slowly dig out our pond while the water is low?

Your loader has more lift capability than mine, while I have never dug a pond, I have dug some pretty big holes:) most of the guys that dig a lot get a toothbar to go on their loader, and claim it about doubles the rate of digging. You might want to look into one of those later, before embarking on a big digging project. Of course digging is directly related to what kind of dirt you have, I have good black dirt right until you hit the limestone shelf rock at about 1 foot down.. so digging is more horizontal here not vertical:laughing:
But at another location where I lived, I took the whole top off of a hill and moved it to build a berm for a shooting range. So some serious digging can be done with a good tractor/loader.

Thanks for all the good information. I don't really plan in doing a lot of digging but thought i might give it a try. I was just curious if it is possible.

I am retired so time as such is not a problem, just catching the pond dry enough in which to work is the trick. We were dragging our bellies in mud and craw dadding our way out much of the time as it was and then it rained.

We had a five acre pond dug several years ago and had plenty of time to arrange trenches and fish habitat before it filled up/ The next one was eight acres and two days after it was finished we got over six inches and with the amount of run off never got back in as it is about 35 feet deep.

Digging ponds in this area has to be done pretty quickly, so time is kind of a relative thing even with pumps.

Yea I think here in south carolina our area is going through a kinda drought because half the pond is empty.

Sorry I'm new to the tractor world. My old 1953 ford 8n is not nothing compared to these new devices haha I drove it at the del ear and i thought it was awesome. I just didn't know if they lasted like the gears usually do.

They seem to do just fine.. just be sure to do the 50 hour service on time to get the metal out of the oil and stay on top of the maint schedule. all will be well.

Yea I defiantly will keep it up. Is it better to have a smaller 4x4 tractor or a larger 2 wheel drive tractor. Say this tractor and a 50 HP two wheel drive. I guess it depends on what you use it for.
