Winston, thanks for the feedback on the Thermostart. I've never needed or used it. It's not currently wired, so I need to make sure the heating element works. I didn't know how much fuel was supposed to come out of the return, and didn't want to have them unattached if/when they started spraying fuel as I tinker. I'll get them connected and investigate the Thermostart.

Norm, I think the overheating troubles will be fixed by the head gasket repair. I like the larger battery, but it's too big to sit in the tray, and it has to tilt one way or the other. I think a slightly smaller battery would fit correctly or at least close enough to not give me interference trouble. It would also save me from having to hack off the battery tray and build a new one. The tractor will be out of commission while I repair the front end components, so if I can't find a shroud to order I'll have to keep the electric fan.

Gary, I need to replace the fan. It would probably be fine, the plastic isn't brittle, but the expense of a new radiator versus a fan blade doesn't make the risk reasonable.

Thanks for the help.

You need the biggest auto type battery that will fit within the width of this holddown clamp and clamp rods, without the electric fan.

I would get the biggest battery that can fit and still allow everything else to fit where it is supposed to, just like the others have said. I would get a new fan or try and search the junck yard for a similar size one, may just be cheaper to order one off ebay or somewhere.

Here is the pictures of my belt. I was wront it does not say LCI. The hoses i was positive said it so i included a picture of it, that must have been what i was thinking.

I meant to post the last paragraph and pics for a different thread, i forgot which it was in and accidentially put it here. Since i cant figure out how to delete the pics i will leave it up, to not have the confusion of the deleted text but the pics still up.

It looks as though your radiator shroud is missing. which helps funnel the air through the core. . :)

Also, replace that busted up fan. These 2 parts will help in keeping the engine cool

The overheating problems may have been what caused the head gasket failure originally. Fixing the head gasket may not fix the over heating. Good idea to check out the cooling system good as you don't want another blown head gasket. That radiator is probably 30+ years old make sure it has good coolant flow through it and that air flows through the cooling fins good too.

I am going to replace the engine driven fan since it has cracked blades, as I mentioned. I will see if I can find a replacement shroud. Until the shroud is replaced, I feel like I need to keep the electric fan. I can still fit a good sized battery in there, just not this massive RV-size battery that's currently dwelling under the bonnet.

I don't think there will be any overheating issues, honestly. The engine driven fan pulls a lot of heat out, and the electric fan moves more by itself. When both are on for a bit I can feel the air cooling off, or, in other terms, the two fans together over-cool the system, something I want to avoid. I am not particularly attached to the electric fan, but it is definitely a viable alternative if I am unable to find the proper shroud. I will put in a thermostatic switch to come on, or install a temperature gauge to avoid cooling things too much.

Again, thank you for the tips. I don't think the overheating issue will plague this tractor anymore, since the blown head gasket has been repaired and it has good coolant. The fan shroud and blades will be replaced, so it will basically be back to stock or better condition in every way.

After you replace the fan you shouldn't have any cooling problems if the radiator is clean. It does a good job of moving air. In the winter my engine never gets hot enough that I can't put my hand on the head or block. Gets a little warmer in the heat of summer but doesn't come close to being as hot as a car engine. I'm going to install a temp gauge this winter just to see what it really gets to.

Yeah my tractor runs so cool also it rarely gets even up to 180 the thermostat temp so all the cooling circulation is done thru a little bypass hose behind the thermostat pretty remarkable if you ask me.
