The posts will be cut way down, as I am only planning for 8 ft high openings, but 12 foot posts just were not long enough so I had to buy 16 footers...

are you sure you will never get a bigger tractor

I have an Oliver Super 77 that will fit just fine, and I will never have the need for anything larger than it is. My main goal with this building is to be able to get my two tractors and quads out of the weather (mainly winter weather), because covering them with tarps is a HUGE pain...lol :confused2:

If you can do 8' doors and 10' walls please do it!
You will thank me later!

That way you can leave the rop up and not wreck the door or frame.

I know I built mine that way !

Definitely going with 8' doors. I even put 8' high doors in my residential garage when I built my house so that I could get my Oliver tractor in it... Thanks for the advice!

Let me start out by wishing everyone a Happy New Year!! I hope everyone had a great holiday season.

Well, it's been a while since my last update on the building, but the month of December was pretty much consumed with the 2 week Whitetail gun season here in PA (i'll post pics later of the bucks we took from my property this year), and of course the remainder of the month was consumed with getting ready for Christmas. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the entire month of December was below freezing, so that didn't help with the outside projects much. Although I did get to move snow for the first time with my JD 2305!

Of course, I have throw in the fact that my lovely wife had me working on a project that she started about the same time I started my building. She ripped down the wallpaper in our dining room because she wanted to paint it, but i don't think she realized how difficult it is to remove wallpaper...although she does now!! I ended up leaving the paper backing on the wall and used a shellac based primer over it. I do have to say though, that this little project did allow me to purchase a new Graco paint sprayer that I will be able to to use on my pole barn as well! :D I'll post a couple of pics of the dining room as well...

So, back to the equipment shed... I don't know that i have mentioned it yet, but my primary assistant on this project has been my 13 year old son, who is more than willing to help me, but his smaller size sometimes makes it difficult to handle this heavier hemlock lumber! lol This was quite evident today when we were setting a 16' 2x10 (a true 10" wide board).

Here are a couple of pics of the completed dining room project... You can't really tell, but the color of the wall to the right of the telescope is brown.

I guess that's enough for now, but hopefully the weather will cooperate and progress will continue on the building...

I wanted to get some thoughts on how I was planning to construct the headers and roof rafters...

Here is what I currently have for the header construction, but I wanted to get some opinions on whether or not it would be adequate for the rafter support. I'm only placing the rafters every 4 feet, so there will be only one rafter between the posts. The header is a 2x10 (the 10 is a true 10" width), with 8 feet between posts.

Since i'm building rafter boards, I'm not sure the birds mouth would even extend back far enough back to hit another header board on the insides of the posts, but i'll know that for sure when I get to the point of cutting the rafter boards (2x8's, true 8" width).

Most ones I have seen have had 2 boards and at least 1 has been let in to the post to carry the load not putting the nails all in shear load.

That's the beauty of polebarn construction--you can set that inside header higher to just catch the rafter.

Yes, that's very true, and I like that idea! Once I get all of the rafters into place, I can just go back and quickly install the inside header. Thanks!

I think it's absolutely wonderful that you have your son helping you. I remember as a kid the many days I would help my dad with various projects. He's gone now but the memories will last a life time. Also I love the oak trim you have in your home, beautiful!
