I have a T-handle too; but I try to use the hand tapper as much as possible to minimize tap breakage from the tap not going in square. My only gripes with it are that it was made in China, and that I had to cut off the protruding threads on the handles as they kept smacking the counterweight and arm.

I prefer to use the machine mount w/guide tap handles. Not much more expensive, takes up 0 bench space and I can use it on the drill press or milling machine and I know the centering is identical. McMaster-Carr

Truth is that I was so bored during the Christmas break I would have done anything to get out of the house so the PTO guard was the thing that did it :laughing:

Next time you get bored, I'd be willing to let you come play in my shop I might even spring for 1/2 the gas, if I get to keep whatever you make

I could see it for larger taps, but on the 0 - 1/4" sizes that I normally use I'd be worried about snapping the tap.

Nope, it's used in a "power off" mode. You use the quill to hold the top which spins on the t-handle. For illustartion, this is a #36 drill and 6/32 tap

Or if you prefer a more traditional approach, a 1/4-20 tap handle using a live center for alignment
