Where abouts in Canada or Quebec can you get an electric winch big enough to do the job, for $50 !!!!!!! Sounds like you got one heck of a deal.

Canadian Tire (like Harbor Freight in US) and probably Princess Auto often have sales on them. (I did see once at $39.00 in sales flier at CTC this fall)
LOL, I even got lucky at a yard sale for $5.00 but it needed a set of brushes.
Full retail is generally about $79.ish and still a good deal IMHO.

Yes, you are right. I have just seen a complete electric winch on sale for $48.99.

For that price it would be a real cheap rotating mechanism. My idea is to connect it directly to the hand cable shaft and since it is a dual directional motor, would rotate the chute either way using the already existing wire cable. Looks like I am gonna be doing some shopping in the next few days for an electric winch to convert my old snow plow chute hand crank mechanism .

Thanks for the tip and idea - sure beats messing with the hydraulics - they can get expensive quickly.

Your cheap winch is identical to the one I have just seen on sale for $48.99 - and yes, for what I had in mind, should be more than adequate.

I just bought one at ctc and installed it last week. Works like a charm. I had to remove the existing crank as I had installed a cab and it would hit it when blower raised all the way. I removed the cable from the winch, (it's held in with allen screw) and used a part of that cable to rotate the chute.

I welded a mounting platform for the winch on the top of the post for the top link. I wrapped the cable several times around the winch drum and did not anchor it to the drum(used it like a windlass). I took one end of the cable around the chute and anchored it with a clamp to where the original cable was connected. I cut the cable so the other end could wrap around the chute the other direction and used a spring of an old bed spring to keep a tension on the cable. The cable wraps on the drum well but it is rubbing on the end bells of the drum, I believe I will put a simple fairlead on it to prevent this - keeping my eye out for something I can use for this. I'll take a picture tomorrow when it gets bright out.

Had you mounted the winch with the drum vertical, as I did, you would not need fairleads.
Actually a nice and easy mod, is it not.

Piloon, You're probably right about mounting it vertical. Maybe when the warm weather comes I'll look at that as an option - don't have a warm, dry place to work on it. Yes, it's an easy mod. I had a piece of 1/4" plate about four inches square, drilled two hole in it for bolting the winch down and then put a couple of strong tack welds down to hold it in place. I didn't weld it in solid, in case it didn't work.

Now for a deflector one.lol I wonder if it could be rigged with a realy solid string to pull it downward, and then another el cheapo winch to pull on it for ''up'' A single cable hook to it and the spring would constantly be pulling it downward..????

DonnieP, your set up is brilliant, I'll be copying exactly for my three point blower. I plan on using a linear actuator for chute tilt, although in theory winch would work perfectly well. Thank you for posting, I printed your pictures, they are supper helpful.

I was able to use a crown vic window motor on my 2750. The gear on it fits right in a 3/4" 6pt socket and the shaft diameter on the 2750 also just fits in a 3/4" socket. I cut the drive part off the socket and I had an easy drive shaft hookup without modifying any factory parts.
