What is your opinion about putting in the coaster valve? I do have some mildly sloping hills, but I dont plan to use it to pull heavy loads. Wife didnt like the sudden stopping at all and now refuses to use it.

The sudden slowing due to the HST setup is one of those love/hate things. Half the crowd is one way and the rest the other. For myself it has been great and after getting used to how to work the accelerator pedal I couldn't be without it. Others will be just the opposite. I know, teaching my granddaughter how to drive my 11, that it is the safest system and easy for kids to learn. But they learn twice as fast as I did.

I'm on your side of the divide -- it just takes getting use to the RTV's characteristics. But I've never operated one with a coast valve. Who knows, I might like it even better. But I am happy with the status quo and plan to stick with it.

Gary, IMO it would be best to use it long enough to get fully acquainted with its operating characteristics and then decide whether you want to go the coast valve route. Your wife may come around if she is willing to give the RTV a second chance.

Try the engine braking for a while...I love it, almost never need the brakes. Takes a little getting used to, let up the thottle easily.

Being used to Kubota HST tractors I was ready for the let off throttle for braking but on my RTV it is more abrupt than the tractors. I had a BX2350 which did the abrupt stop in reverse and it was so bad, to me, that I got rid of the tractor in a few months. It could be resolved a bit with close attention and easing off the throttle but it still did it when I forgot to feather it. Could never get it to do real smooth stop in reverse.
When I drove the RTV1140 the first time and it did the abrupt stop I thought "OH (&^$#%&(()) NO! but after driving it I found out that it is very easy to release the throttle easy and it stops easy, not like the BX2350. The abrupt stop is there if you want to stop quick but ease off the pedal and it stops without being abrupt. It's just getting used to the return pressure of the pedal.

I've been searching for a deal on a new RTV900. One of the Kubota dealers told me that several people who have had the relief valve installed to eliminate the engine braking have been back at the dealership to have the valve removed, since they found that they liked the old system better.

I presently have a 1997 Mule 2510, which has been very reliable, but am ready to upgrade to the RTV900, at least I think! One question, how does the RTV500 compare to the RTV900 in power? My neighbor just bought a new 500, and is very unhappy with the power of the thing, but other than that issue, is very happy.

I have read just about every post in this forum and I can tell you that the power profile from owners runs from sluggish to pulls down mountains. I think it has something to do with how the throttle is set up the servo pressure adjustment. It seems some are set right at the factory and some need adjustment so they have power to spin the tires. Some dealers know how to set them and others try to fluff you and say that that is normal. I suspect they lost a lot of sales by not adjusting them at the dealers. From all the info here, I would say the 500 has the power if it is set up right. I am speaking only from reading this forum because I have yet to put a foot in my 900 RTV. I havent seen the 500 but they must be quiet a bit smaller than the 900. THe 900 is smaller than the 1100. We have both at the jobsite and there is quiet a bit of difference in them in size and of course cost.
Do a search on this topic and you will find all kinds of info regarding annoying problems, fixes for them and brags and complaints.

I never owned a muscle car, I drove lots and lots of low-geared off road vehicles in the military and I came to the de-facto conclusion that:

"If you can't bark the tires when up-shifting, you might try barking them when down-shifting".

If you put in a coast valve, there will be no mojo left in your rtv.

To me, there is nothing like the low-geared mud-grip dragging on a loose or slippery down hill route, or otherwise experiencing the engine, suspension, tires and gear-boxes doing their job(s).

I like to think of brakes as a crutch or handrail.

Well I am going to try it a while without a coaster brake. Wife insists it is too big and obnoxious for her to drive. SHE CAN be very stubborn when it comes to new things. We drive across the pond levee which is about 15 feet wide on top with gravel cover and she didnt like to even drive the golf cart across it for a while. She still wont drive her SUV across it. She threatened to get out and walk a mile or so into town once when we were in Northern Canada and on a frozen lake. I decided to cut a few donuts on the ice, which absolutely terrified her. There was nothing but smooth ice for hundreds of feet son absolutely nothing to be afraid of, but the one loop was enough for her. She may come around if I can get her on it to ride with me for a bit. I explained to her that I wanted her to use it so she can get to where I may be working across a small creek that her golf cart wont cross. She says that if she cant get to me on the golf cart that I am on my own. What a woose. OH, well, more time for me to enjoy it till she overcomes her fear of "LARGE and DIfferent"

I've had a 900 and a 1100 rtv and I put coast valves in both of them.It makes them so much easier to drive. Before I put them in only I could drive them and then I would forget and almost put head through windshield. They don't really coast either as some have you believe they slowly slow down like a car.I've had them in for over 3 years with no problems.Made a new vehicle out ofthem.
