Someone pepper spraying my dogs before talking to me about it would be pretty unforgivable to me. But then again these dogs shouldn't be running loose.

You wouldn't forgive a person who pepper sprayed your dogs even though you readily admit they shouldn't be running loose

Unfortuntely I think most dog owners feel that way.

Unfortunately I think most dog owners feel that way.

Pepper spray will irritate the dog, but it's not going to hurt them. It's about the most humane a way to handle an aggressive dog as one can find.
Problem with shooting (and I love guns!!!) is it's too easy to miss (with a handgun) a moving target unless you practice a heck of a lot. Then factor in the fear and adrenaline.

I recommend that you go to meet these neighbors and get introduced to the dogs. Let them know that you are part of the 'pack'. Then have the neighbor bring them to your place and get reintroduced on your turf. They won't be able to connect with you away from the home introduction. Treats always pay off. Demand performance before you give them some steak.

At worst, pepper spray but never guns on a dog. You would invite the wrath of the neighborhood that way. Don't even think of poison. Get them to be your friends. Maybe they will make a valuable asset for you someday and reward you for your friendship.

Yes, good god why is everyone here so quick to want to shoot everything. You may end up with a lawsuit on your hand anyway. Pepper spray is a great idea, and if they didnt bite ya this time its likely they wont!

My UPS and Fedx drivers both carry treats.

I myself have no dogs & just really have no desire whatsoever to carry dog treats around :confused3:

It's very cut-&-dry to me: I'd like us to be friendly neighbors, but you need to keep your dog off my property. Especially since my friends have kids who also won't have dog treats to hopefully keep themselves intact.

And, also since someday soon I'll have farm animals, possibly goats ... I know I'll need to improve that 4-wire barbed fence for them ... but goats would probably actually be a dog treat.

The old method of curing dogs from trespassing, after you speak to the owners, is to carry an old 410 shotgun with rock salt load instead of lead shot.

The owner was home ... this time.

Actually, he was in his yard looking right in my direction when the dogs came under the fence onto my property. He was actually standing there with his hands on his hips, watching the dogs.

I wouldn't forgive a person that pepper sprayed my dogs with out telling me there was a problem with them first. I have had my dogs pepper sprayed while inside my fence just so they could watch them suffer and laugh about it. That's why us dog owners feel that way about some neighbors handling our dogs. That's how dogs are made mean.

I agree. I'm kinda stunned that guns come into the discussion as quickly here. You guys are feeding my pinko liberal bias that gun owners are a bunch of whackos!:D

The dogs are doing exactly what they are supposed to do: bark and chase away a stranger. What is so hard to understand? Obviously the dogs need to learn that the OP is not a stranger. How about meeting the dogs under controlled conditions with the owner before talking about blowing them away. Obviously the neighbor understands the dogs are not supposed to be out of the yard and he behaved very reasonably IMO by getting them under control as soon as he realized they had escaped. Try a little neighborly chat and understand dog behavior before loading up.;)

I would absolutely never do that. But I would spray them if I thought I was in danger ... & I suspect lots of dog owners would still be mad at me for that.

I have pepper sprayed a large dog walking home from the bus stop. The owner did not like it; I called police and reported it to animal control.

Abe Lincoln defended a farmer that was attacked by a dog and killed it with a pitch fork.

The dogs owner asked why didn't the farmer use the other end of the pitch fork? His answer was, for the same reason the dog didn't come at me with his other end.
