U would be better off with a unit that has a straight shaft without ujoint from the engine to the trans..As far as I can tell the 2520 is not built like this.

That's correct, the engine in the 2520 is rigidly attached to the transmission through the tunnel housing. There is a splined coupling directly connecting the drive shaft from the engine to the input shaft of the hydrostatic drive, no u-joints.

That must be why the 2320 doesn't have a hump in the operator's deck, where as the 2520 does have one.

Nothing is mentioned about greasing this in the manual. Nor is there anything about replacing it, etc. I just went and checked and there are no grease fittings on this U-Joint nor the U-joint for the shaft that goes to the front axle.

For what it's worth: I am on my tractor almost everyday and it has not sounded or acted funny until the 20 seconds it start making that noise before I shut it down. I am guessing that noise was the U-Joint coming apart/vibrating and causing all that wear.

Mechanic friend coming in about 30 minutes to look at it....and then I will be heading to JD dealer to show them the pics and see what they say.

Check out this.

Interesting....

If there was truly no mention of greasing these u-joints in the owners manual I would be raising h*ll at the Deere dealer, to the Deere regional service manager, etc on up the line until the repair was covered in full. The failure was a classic u-joint failure which also took out the shaft. Obviously it had never been greased since new, and if there was no mention in the owners manual to do so I personally would expect Deere to cover the bill.

That will definitely give you some good ammunition in the discussions.

I'm betting there was no mention because there are multiple suppliers some are sealed some have zerks. It wouldn't surprise me if there were u-joints on the same tractor with and without zerks.

Did the OP mention definitively what type of joint was on his tractor?

Nothin for nothin but the picture below (right out of my 2320 owners manual) shows the grease fittings to be greased on the 2320.
I know for a fact there are many more under the tractor but I can not find a sole that can tell me, show me or point me to a manual that shows the locations.

FYI: The U-joint going from the Hydro Drive the Front Axel (the one NOT busted) does NOT have any Zerks on it.

From what I see from the blown up u-joint, I don't see a Zerk.....but it is in pieces and some can't be found.

Boy...this is just fun....learn something new everyday. :confused2:
