just about every disc mower made now is like that but if the idler gear goes out on that model u must split the bar all the way down and on the nh u just rmove to tie bolts and pull that one section and if need to u can leave that section out and pull the bar back together and go finish cutting hay

With approaching 1000 units sold, I can speak from experience. The Fort mower can be repaired as you describe by splitting the cutter bar, however, the unique pinion gear design is to have the pinion gear shear off and sacrifice the $169 gear and not blow a idler bearing. There is a way to repair a idler without breaking the entire bar into. The Kit to repair a Late model NH or New Idea shaft drive runs $225 + and that is after market prices not OEM prices.

Here is a picture that shows the groove cut in the vertical pinion shaft of the Fort disc mower. This precut groove allows the pinion to shear off at the groove before damage has been done inside the cutter bar. Pull out 4 bolts and 30 minutes you are back in the field. If a person wanted no down time, he could also keep a extra pod in his tractor tool box. I know of no other company that has such a fool proof and unique design. (8 ft $6495) Ken Sweet

thats why i run a 616 nh in my opinion they or the most user friendly and arent no higher to work on then any other brand but just a whole lot simpler to work on and i have worked on just about every brand there is

I was just at my Son's shop in Stanford,Ky over the weekend. He gave me the "inside scoop" on those late model NH and New Idea disc mowers. The life of the skid plates are 1000 acres and about that for the pods or you can go into the shop and pull out all the pods and put in different thickness spacers and make the teeth mesh tighter. His neighbors keep his shop busy repairing those and the 5408 New Idea disc mower of similar design. He had a New Idea 5409 discbine in his shop, that he had just gone through this past week for his next door neighbor. Ken Sweet

you dont have to repair drive shafts on the NH because of the module design, with the shear hubs, etc. if you hit something it is 10 minutes of changing a $30 to $40 dollar shear hub and off you go. but for 3 years that is warranty anyway......

NH, Deere, Kuhn, and probably everyone else in the industry have a similarly designed failure point.

I believe the NH design is the way to go.
I do see what Ken is saying about the Fort. It brakes away if you hit something. That's ok if just the blade hub is damaged. But if something happens deeper into the bar....Hmmmm.
And with my luck, it would!

have u seen the skid plates on a 616 nh u will have to be really hard on a mower to wear the skid plates out on it in just 1000 acres
