I have an Ariens walk behind trimmer, several push lawnmowers, several brushcutters/trimmers, a bush hog and a pond. If I had to only pick one for around the pond I would pick the cheap push lawnmower, followed by the brushcutter. A cheap lawnmower is like a rental pickup truck -- it will double as a humvee when required
The brushcutter is just versatile and works great but is tiring
I had to modify my walk behind by drilling the wheel mount brackets to raise it since the original ground clearance made it next to usless on anything but a manicured lawn. Once I modified it, it became a weed eating wonder and I get much more use out of it maintaining paths and around the pond. The line is .155 so it lasts a fair amount of time and is easy to change. I bought mine used and figured if worst came to worst I could use the motor in a lawnmower
